Game is the same but there are benefits to using either. With steam you can use steam wallet as a form of payment. That might be really beneficial if you live in certain areas of the world I guess. With retail, there are more sales. Steam have fewer sales. And the minor thing is when you buy expansions on steam, you have to go to mogstation and input the keys and all that stuff. Not hard for most people but just an extra step you don't need to deal with if you are retail. Most players I've talked to prefer retail. Myself included.
You could buy the Mac version for your current account, then use one of the many ways that exist to run a Mac program on a PC.
That's the only way I can think of that doesn't involve starting entirely over.
