Very worth it for me, and for a lot of people considering the constant growing playerbase.
Already sounds like a great game then.
If you're skeptical about the game just try the free trial. No time limit.
Totally worth it.
It's pretty much the same amount i pay for Netflix & Amazon Prime type of things each month. But i most often spend more time playing FF14 than i watch said services.. Also i don't drink alcohol at pubs or do clubbing (not my thing really) so i guess rather spending my money on entertainment stuff like FF14 sub, and no regrets. :)
Like the sub allows them to have a budget and no need to have every cool thing on cash store or sell p2w items to make money like many games do. Most simple way to put it also: On FF14 you can farm cool mounts and weapons and glams (skins) inside the game, on most other games these days you buy them from cash shop with real money, sometimes even on random loot boxes.
So on FF14 people know on what they are spending that sub money on and what getting with it. Like on ESO for example ALL the cool weapons and mounts were on the Crown Store to buy with real money and gamble crates, if wanted something nice.. it meant for sure spending more than 13eur, often saw people dropping 100-500eur on bunch of loot boxes and still they got only poop.
So yeah, FF14 is one of the last sub model games, but premium quality product these days compared to the barely working gamble games that have annoying things that you can buy fixes from cash shop. FF14 has passionate devs that treats the game as their lives work and value their players. And greatest community.
Like, seriously, here's what we get about every four months: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/764840557caa22a8f77550b480aa3c79b2e733d2
0 P2W and that is 100% true nothing you buy in this game gets you farther or better than anyone else. Also, I feel like the devs have a good relationship with their player-base. The game launcher is always filled with daily updates about what they are doing and why they're doing it.
This is probably the best MMORPG I've played and was my WoW killer.
Seems like a nice community that supports the game.
Makes the game sound very healthy.
Fast forward to last month, I said, sure, let me put $13 onto a sub, and see what i can get, if I enjoy it.
In this current sub, I got all my crafters and gathers to max level (a goal of mine for a while) and have put in, around, 100-120 hours, and I have about 10 days left on my subscription.
To answer your question, $13 for a month, getting easily 120 hours of gameplay from that month, is incredibly worth it. Youre looking at (from my month) for every $1 spent, 10 hours of enjoyment from the game.
There are $60 games, even $70 games, that only offer 6-10 hours of enjoyment. But, lets take the median at 20-30 hours right? For every $2 spent, youre getting 1 hour of enjoyment.
If youre looking from this benchmark, then yes, it is absolutely worth it. 5 Major content expansions, which, is easily 600-1000 hours worth of gameplay, 20 different classes, more raids, dungeons, and farming than you know what to do with... yea..
So, all in all, I understand the whole Pay and play, vs sub based arguement, and it took me a long time to get into FF14 as a whole, mainly because I too, was not interested in subscribing.. But, with that being said...
$13 for 100+ hours of gameplay for that month, vs $60/$70 on a game, you will likely play until you beat, and then never touch again, IF, you enjoy it, and with current quality of gaming, its like, a 50/50 if its going to even be worth the asking price, for a fraction of the time value gained from playing.
And yes, there is arguement that, "Well I purchased the game, I should just be able to login and play" and to that, there is some validity to it, in which I recommend ESO or GW2 on that point alone, but, after some time with either, there is a reason why, sub based ideology works. Now I am not saying ESO or GW2 are better or worse, as it is purely personal opinion, but, yea. You are not forced to sub, so you an take breaks, and be fine.
My personal justification, when i resub, is, i look at the games that are coming out or have come out for the month after I am about to resub. And I ask myself, am I buying any of these. If I am, I have no real need to subscribe again. But If I am not, and my current backlog doesnt seem interesting, sure, let me put $13 down on FF. And, if you are hypercritical about $ vs Time value, literally like, a full weekend of playing the game, will pay off your sub in hours spent vs $'s spent.
As someone has already stated about the free trial. You get ARR and Post ARR, up to level 60 (with all of those classes) for free, with limitations. If you are interested in what those limitations are, I suggest reading this:
Which, as most of the community states, ARR/Post ARR content is generally regarded as the worst content, even with SQE's changes, it has come a long way, but it is still painful to do. The general rule of thumb, is, if you can make it past ARR, and you still want more, you would, by definition, have played atleast 1/5th of the "story content" and a fair amount of the optional content (with limitiations) that is offered in the game. The catch, is that a lot of classes do not "open up" until 60,70,80.
You can sink as much time into the free trial as you want, and not pay a pretty penny. And, if you have invested 500+ hours into the trial, is it really too bad to pay $60 for the complete edition, and then $12 a month for sub, when you are already at a 7hours of enjoyment, per $ spent, the second you click purchase, not including the 30 days you get free for new subs, and progression you gained from the trial?

I'm happy there is still an MMO with monthly sub and no pay 2 win, but I think this is the only one.
