Steam has to be up and working for you to be able to log into the game. If it goes down while you're in game, you'd be fine.
Example: Right now, my Steam is refusing to load on my computer. Therefore, I can't launch FFXIV or even patch it. I'm trying a restart as my computer had crashed while coming out of sleep mode.
I rarely have issues with Steam and launching the game, however.
One major pro for non-steam is that it does SEEM to go on sale more often. Like CE was 50% a few weeks ago through the website, but not on Steam.
Sold a knife (on steam market place) back in 2015 and grabbed ff14 collectors edition.
Hahah samesies! :) I did not know what to pick before i thought about exactly the fact that on Steam i always see the hours on all games and i liked that idea.
And yes, i wish there also was some Steam achievements to get from FFXIV, i know some would not like, but i'd think would be just cool extra to have that would not be away from anyone who would not like to do them.
Played a bit over a year without any problems by having the Steam version, so i guess anyone go with what they want. Well, there is the thing i have to keep the Steam window open just when i login to FFXIV after the last summers change where it made us all confirm/link our Steam accounts from mogstation (that demanded logging in to your right Steam account once), other than that no problems.
Oh and to OP, if you decide to go with Steam, and for whatever reasons had more accounts than one on (on either service), make sure to link the right ones, it has instructions and the "are you sure" confirm thingies, so to anyone being able to read it should go without problems. Just a heads up so not have to contact SE customer support since only they are able to unlink your account if you do it on wrong account.
If you go with just the Mogstation/SE store version, you don't have to link any accounts = more simple and fast i'd guess for those who do not even use Steam or not need to watch the game time (you can still in game see your character hours individually with /playtime command if remember right).
No wrong pick tho, but the pick is permanent so cannot switch from one format to the other later unless makes a new account so all progress lost. So that is the thing to keep in mind.
Have fun on your journey! :)
Extra layers means a bit more complication when setting things up, though, and if Steam goes down you can't play, even if the game servers are up.
