That style being western MMOs.
Did you not play FF1? Because it was clearly based off of D&D.
There is some stylistic differences between JRPGs (Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy etc.) and WRPGs (Baldur's Gate, Ultima) but they have common ancestry that can't be ignored. Especially since Dragon Quest is explicitly inspired by Ultima.
And then there's the fact that FF14, as an MMO, has more in common the WRPGs than JRPGs.
FFXIV ARR was literally redid in the style of WoW. If we were talking about 1.0 I'd have a different opinion.
If I understood JPN I would play with that language on, but only because I've heard it's way more hornt. And only after ARR, because Gideon Emery.
Yoshi-P has been up-front about the various inspirations for FF14 and they're all western MMOs, including WoW.
Conversely, 1.0 was based on a flaming heap of garbage.
