Why should the strong do menial tasks?
Why should a Godslayer help some farmer with his crops? Why should Godslayers fetch wine from some drunkard instead of literally anyone else?
Because said godslayer is a swell guy who's willing to do menial tasks for peasants due to his inherent niceness.
Well yeah, but in the context of the actual story WoL is literally playing errand boy to people who are shocked and horrified that WoL is currently being their errand boy, which is charming when you think about it.
"Egads! you're the warrior of light! slayer of titan! do you mean to say you'll help me pick these gyshal greens?"
WoL: *slow dramatic nod*
"B-but why? surely you have more important things to- no, wait, best to not look a gift horse in the mouth, thanks so much!" conversations like this are pretty common in HW, the game is actively reinforcing how unusual it is that someone as important as WoL is just helping the everyman. Sure, it's a fake extension of gameplay to push the MMO thing, but they at least have fun with it and try to reinforce that the sidequests and fetch quests are optional, least in hw they do.
heck, in post arr they do this a lot too, but the whole "a demigod is picking vegetables for me oh lord what did i do to deserve this honor?" thing is most common hw onwards.
besides, arr and post arr is an unforgiveable slog that i wouldn't wish on my worst enemies, so it's nice to interpret our WoL as just being a swell guy who helps because he wants to.
While this part is very true, the filler quest "storyline" to unlock Ridorana Lighthouse literally felt like it was made by the ARR storyboard writer. I'm sure people know the quest I'm talking about.
After meandering for so long, (pray come to the waking sands at your earliest convencience) (meet us back at the rising stones, even though we have no reason to make you travel back and forth) my willingness to help with menial tasks is very waning.
Which sort of leads into another discussion, side quests. You know the ones, the ! that fill up towns and nobody bothers to do them, and why should you? They are either chores, like picking weeds which take longer than they should, or killing a few overworld mobs for horrible exp that killing 1 mob in any dungeon gives the same amount.
Even the most fervent lore and immersion players I know don't even bother with sidequests.
Seriously though it really is cool how they made the WoL so powerful in the canon. It did kinda make me feel like a pretty powerful mofo when Zenos just one shots everyone but you the first time you face him. And then he just crushes your hopes and dreams shortly after
which is a shame, because some of those sidequests are pretty good. I'm a fan of how asinine the mogleo sidequests are. tedious, sure, but there's something deliciously evil about a lazy moogle knight manipulating you into doing all of his legwork. it gets to the point where you just wanna see where it all eventually ends up going, and to their credit, it goes nowhere in particular, but it's a fun ride that reminds you that the drk sidequest where you beat them up is meant to be a gift from the writers to you for having to do the mogleo quest chain.
if anything the mogleo sidequests just enhance anything moogle-beating related.
love this post 10/10
