FFXIV'S WoL Is A Badass (Updated) [Spoilers]
I figured i'd make this post to point out just how over-the-top the ffxiv writers decided to make this incarnation of the character. sure, WoL is us, and has no specific face or gender, but...well...that hasn't stopped the writers from transforming WoL into a chuck norris fact elemental. So here's a brief list of things that make WoL a badass.

-WoL's "thing" is that he/she kills primals, godlike beings that take the souls of any alive and command a specific element of nature. He/She is so good at it that they just casually stroll into a beast-tribe's territory, attune to the aetheryte leading to said primal, kill said primal and leave and there's nothing the beast tribes can do about it.

-WoL destroyed an entire religion built around murdering vengeful dragons and had both sides make amends....by killing their leaders and any and all who opposed the peaceful transition...except that one priest...♥♥♥♥ that guy though.

-In order to do this WoL had to fight the pope, who became his own version of the knights of the round, as well as niddhogg, the ultimate anti-human advocate for dragonkind and one of the most powerful dragons of his brood.

-WoL tanked ultimate end and beat the ever living ♥♥♥♥ out of the knights of the round in the middle of the summon's attack, their leader was understandably confused and horrified, and died from the shock of seeing it happen.

-WoL killed niddhogg...twice.

-As we've seen in the alexander brute justice raid, WoL doesn't look at explosions.

-WoL owns an army of ninjas who are in debt to him/her for giving them a home.

-WoL beat the xande and cloud of darkness of his/her world.

-WoL tanked ultima.

-WoL sometimes has to save his/her groups from being killed by meteors.....by standing beneath them and absorbing the impact.

-WoL has beaten me...twice...remember that I'm former primus l'cie from orience and incredibly powerful, despite how goofy I am, and I even once tanked a nuclear blast back in my homeland...which was destroyed by said blast.

-As amdapor keep [hard] has shown us, WoL killed the boogyman.

-WoL has fought literal armies, once he fought a small military group led by a deranged holy woman out to kill her daughter, in defense of said little girl, WoL and his/her DRK pal fought them all off. Aside from that he's fought garlean platoons several times, each with decreasing difficulty as he/she got used to fighting an army of buffoons for hire.

-WoL eats voidsent for breakfast, and has killed innumerable amounts of them.

-WoL once delved into a tonberry infested hellhole and killed their king. He would then proceed to make peace with said tonberries and went in a second time to save them from a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Mamool Ja

-WoL has survived multiple encounters with the mandervilles, an incredibly dangerous, eccentric family of lesser deities led by their matriarch, the goddess of destruction and death who shall not be named. he also happens to be BFFs with their son.

-WoL has killed at least one kraken in his/her lifetime.

-WoL's idea of fishing is to fire dragonkillers at a giant flying whale that can control stormclouds. he/she goes fishing quite often.

-WoL rubs shoulders with some of the finest minds and warriors this side of eorzea and by stormblood, advises the world leaders of the eorzean alliance.

-WoL has beaten raubahn, admittedly raubahn went in with a...er..handicap...and this made him no less terrifying.

-Speaking of which, this all happened at a grand melee between ishgard and ALL THREE OF EORZEA'S ARMIES. and as thancred pointed out, WoL single handedly won ishgard's fight for them.

-WoL has beaten raubahn's equal in combat, ilberd, whose ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥T AOES CAN GO ♥♥♥♥ THEMSEL-

-WoL is BFFs with the creator of the world, hydaelyn.

-WoL has held his/her own against a party of former warriors of light turned warriors of darkness. admittedly, things almost didn't end well that time, but he/she did hold out against more than one with more ease than expected.

-WoL has also regularly fought dragon armies and repelled an attack on ishgard proper before cleaning out and resecuring a fortress held by the dravanian armies.

-WoL beat hraesvelgr so hard he decided to give mankind the benefit of the doubt.

-WoL has not only beaten the moogle version of the knights of the round, he's/she's also beaten the king and knights they were based on. However he/she only shares those horror stories with friends at the dinner table.......we can still hear the kupos.....(traumatic wartime flashbacks)

-Speaking of moogles, WoL actually helped an aspiring moogle knight, mogleo, become a member of the pomguard by doing all of his work for him. of course said work involved slaying a LOT of dragons and routinely patrolling the churning mists and routinely bailing mogleo out of trouble....how the hell do moogles survive all that?

-During the alexander storyline, alexander was using a simulation to determine the best possible future, but because it couldn't quantify WoL into the equation it had to test him/her personally but ended up getting its ♥♥♥ beat so hard that it decided that the mathematically correct solution was to just kill itself in a sealed timeloop. so in essence WoL beat up math.

-WoL beat bahamut...by entering his summoning crystal and beating his soul half to death.

-WoL would later go on to harness bahamut's power and use it to murder ascians, the cthulhus of the ffxiv universe.

-Did i mention WoL killed a few of those? he/she did, he/she specifically fought three/four or more ascians and killed them. it got to the point where two tried to fight him at the same time, then fused...and it still didn't do them any good.

-WoL Managed to beat a technologically enhanced warrior who was so powerful he could enslave gods, and then he beat shinryu for good measure.

-As of SB WoL singlehandedly resurrected the dangerous art of summoning and developed a summon bahamut spell, the self-same bahamut whose ass he personally kicked.

-WoL Has beaten discount Exdeath and Kefka.

-WoL has defeated ivon couerifist's angry ghost.Ivon was the founder of the monk job in ffxiv.

-WoL Is besties with two of the four lords of the cardinal directions, genbu and byakko, and has beaten both of them in a fight.

-WoL went into an ultima weapon creation facility and dismantled everything he could find, including the ultima weapon from ffvi.

-WoL kicked wu kong's ♥♥♥ despite the fact that it was a two on one battle by the end. This is a much older wu kong who went by his alias, a name meaning "equal to heaven" So in a way, WoL beat heaven.

-WoL has single handedly brought prosperity to at least one of every beast tribe, the sahagin, amal jaa, the sylphs, ixali, moogles, vath, etc, etc. He did this by inconveniencing the evil beast tribes and stealing their resources, as well as murdering their strongest warriors literally every day for an entire month until the beast tribe NOT possessed by an evil primal god were able to stand on their own without being threatened by their tempered counterparts.

-WoL Liberated Ala Mhigo and Doma in under a week.

-WoL managed to beat up the moon as of patch 4.3.

-WoL's own imagination is so powerful that it's been classified as a potential warzone, in his/her imagination the warrior of light can recreate battles he/she has fought and re-fight them, going so far as to physically sustain injuries in the process. His/her mind is SO powerful that he/she can empower said foes and turn them into their final forms. To date WoL has recreated neo exdeath, God kefka, neo ultima, and ultimate bahamut, and every time wol has to remember these fights he/she risks their life just having a simple daydream. However he/she can generate powerful weapons as a reward for braving his/her imagination. WoL does this at least once a week regularly.

-As a disciple of the land/hand, the warrior of light's production capabilites outshine those of ul'dah, WoL can literally become the richest person in eorzea in a single night of selling and crafting. they sell/craft some of the most powerful equipment in the world daily.

anywho, that's just me pointing out the obvious, WoL is an incredibly overpowered protagonist thanks to the writers going out of their way to make this incarnation of WoL seem like the ultimate badass. people still joke about how he's the "magic solution" to primals in-game before trying to use dangerous allagan technology to defeat newer primals..then finding out that they suck at using it, so WoL has to fight it anyway.

Joke's on them eh?

Why not add that WoL is also able to gather/Produce and sell almost everything like a giant Company? Need "insert Item" to build a City? Give me 20 min...

Should the weak serve the strong?

Why should the strong do menial tasks?

Why should a Godslayer help some farmer with his crops? Why should Godslayers fetch wine from some drunkard instead of literally anyone else?

Because said godslayer is a swell guy who's willing to do menial tasks for peasants due to his inherent niceness.

Or simply because it serves as a fake extension of game time because otherwise you would finish the story very quickly, it is common practice in literally every similar mmo.

Well yeah, but in the context of the actual story WoL is literally playing errand boy to people who are shocked and horrified that WoL is currently being their errand boy, which is charming when you think about it.
"Egads! you're the warrior of light! slayer of titan! do you mean to say you'll help me pick these gyshal greens?"

WoL: *slow dramatic nod*

"B-but why? surely you have more important things to- no, wait, best to not look a gift horse in the mouth, thanks so much!" conversations like this are pretty common in HW, the game is actively reinforcing how unusual it is that someone as important as WoL is just helping the everyman. Sure, it's a fake extension of gameplay to push the MMO thing, but they at least have fun with it and try to reinforce that the sidequests and fetch quests are optional, least in hw they do.
heck, in post arr they do this a lot too, but the whole "a demigod is picking vegetables for me oh lord what did i do to deserve this honor?" thing is most common hw onwards.

besides, arr and post arr is an unforgiveable slog that i wouldn't wish on my worst enemies, so it's nice to interpret our WoL as just being a swell guy who helps because he wants to.

While this part is very true, the filler quest "storyline" to unlock Ridorana Lighthouse literally felt like it was made by the ARR storyboard writer. I'm sure people know the quest I'm talking about.

After meandering for so long, (pray come to the waking sands at your earliest convencience) (meet us back at the rising stones, even though we have no reason to make you travel back and forth) my willingness to help with menial tasks is very waning.

Which sort of leads into another discussion, side quests. You know the ones, the ! that fill up towns and nobody bothers to do them, and why should you? They are either chores, like picking weeds which take longer than they should, or killing a few overworld mobs for horrible exp that killing 1 mob in any dungeon gives the same amount.

Even the most fervent lore and immersion players I know don't even bother with sidequests.

Huh... And here I was thinking all I did as Warrior of Light was pull 3-23 other adventurers out of me arse and take all the credit for killing the primals. :steammocking:

Seriously though it really is cool how they made the WoL so powerful in the canon. It did kinda make me feel like a pretty powerful mofo when Zenos just one shots everyone but you the first time you face him. And then he just crushes your hopes and dreams shortly after :steamsad:

which is a shame, because some of those sidequests are pretty good. I'm a fan of how asinine the mogleo sidequests are. tedious, sure, but there's something deliciously evil about a lazy moogle knight manipulating you into doing all of his legwork. it gets to the point where you just wanna see where it all eventually ends up going, and to their credit, it goes nowhere in particular, but it's a fun ride that reminds you that the drk sidequest where you beat them up is meant to be a gift from the writers to you for having to do the mogleo quest chain.
if anything the mogleo sidequests just enhance anything moogle-beating related.
