Easily Fix for Sporatic Controller Unresponsiveness Issue

Many people have experienced a problem where their controller would randomly become unresponsive for a few seconds. There is a way to fix the issue, and it's pretty easy.

Disclaimer

I want to be perfectly clear that this is not a problem on the Windows side, but a problem with Final Fantasy XIV itself. There is a bug in their game's USB controller enumeration code which causes this. This fix is temporary until SE finally acknowledges it is a problem on their end. I say this because this issue is not unique to Windows users, it also happens on PS3 and PS4. Based on my 10+ years as an IT professional tracking down hardware & software problems, this tells me it's the game. This fix only applies to Windows 7, 8, and 10, if you experience this on a game console contact Sony and SquareEnix.

How To Fix It on Windows (Follow Instructions Exactly)

Bring up Device Manager.
Scroll down to Software Devices.
Select the device Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator.
Right-Click this device, and select Disable.

This eliminates the problem, but it doesn't fix it. SE needs to rewrite the code that handles Xinput and Direct Input controllers. I've played this game using a Dualshock 2 with a USB dongle, a Wii U Pro Controller with a Mayflower wireless USB adapter, a Steam Controller, and a Logitech F710 wireless controller and each one had this issue in FFXIV. But, this problem doesn't occur in other games using either a Xinput or Direct Input controller. Hope this helps others with this problem.

To be fair, while it is thread necromancy....
It is still an active issue with the game.

Occasionally I've had to go back in to device manager and disable the enumerator after it gets turned back on for some reason...
(Probably a windows update actually...)

It's so weird played with DS4 controller for like more than 500 Hrs never have any issue before until now probably cause by new windows 10 updated.

reason why die in raids ect mostyl, because allways play with ps4 controller on pc. thx for the tip.

Been playing the game for a few months now, yesterday it started having this issue, after some searching saw this post. Thank you, the steps helped fix the issue.

Man, thank you for that hint! Love playing the game with controller but the bug suddenly appeared and it really killed me... Now it works fine again!

Never had this problem before (playing since 2014 on PC with a controller) and after patch 6.3 it suddenly started happening, literally unplayable. This fix seemed to work for a week or so, but then it returned. The Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator remains disabled, yet the controller still stops responding once or twice every minute.

Anyone knows how can this be permanently solved?

Third party mods... I use XIVLauncher's Dalamud and it has a plugin called "DeviceChangeFix" you can install directly from it.

Obligatory reminder that using such mods is against the game's Terms of Service, but Dalamud doesn't have anything that could count as cheats (only QoL stuff) and as long as you're quiet about it, you should be fine.
