Mentors
As someone who is relatively new, (2 months) and observing the game and its players in dungeons and raids...
Why are Mentors trash? It's not really a question of: "are they trash(?)" but why are they trash. I know this can come off an anecdotal but it seems to be a shared opinion so I'd like to know why. Also not to lock this into a false dichotomy but are they trash because of overworking to achieve the rank of Mentor or are they just stuck up? I personally would never want everyone to know I was 'experienced' because of a username icon but whatever.

Honestly, this is coming from my personal experience.. Over 80% of the mentors out there simply are that to achieve some level of completion, get the crown, and thats really it. While most have an overall "game knowledge" to assist, there are very few that actually embrace the mentor position. Most "true mentors" come from people who are not labeled as such. I have a friend, whom, if you announce that you are a first timer, will actively explain mechs before the fight. Granted it is a fairly rough overview, but still. They atleast give an overview. I have not really seen a mentor with the tag doing that in 1500 hours. To most, obtaining mentor is like another grind, like a relic weapon, or 2000 S ranks, or omnicraft. all 90s, etc etc. This is the overwhelming majority.

I really believe that mentor program should be something like what Tarkov has. Applications are submitted, reviewed and approved internally. Getting that status means you can prove your knowledge and are actually wanting to help people. But alas, everyone just wants the crown.

i have a bit over 1k hours now, and i have to say mentors are usually the most unfriendly/unpatient people you can meet in ff14.

they leave trials if you fail, the healers "rescue" pull you through dungeons without explanations and if you move an inch away you get snarky comments,
they dont care if you are a sprout, they treat you like you SHOULD know the game instantly and all its mechanics, its so sad.

I love coaching new players through ex synced content in Duty Finder when it comes up in Mentor roulette. I'm always performing the best DPS I can, tanking, healing you name it as a savage raider, and try to provide tips as needed and requested. I love being a mentor this way. I don't really care what other people think or how other mentors are viewed, this is just what I do and that's all that matters to me.

from my recent adventures in the NN: 75% of mentors are just ♥♥♥♥-posting in it, 20% give bad or partially bad/wrong advise and 5% are true Mentors which know the ropes
coming from my modest 3.6k hours of game time and having cleared a lot of content (from dungeon to hardest content), i feel i can give a educated guess

the NN is good if you want to know some basics like "where do i unlock job XYZ", "what is a trial" or "how do i change some settings" but most of the time not good for anything above the basics of this game like "baseline job tools" or "how do i clear recent content"

as some already said, with the mentor crown comes achievements, glams, mounts etc and you dont need to be "good" or particularly knowledgeable at the game at all, to get this
most mentors just dont know better and the png distinguishes them from the normal crowd

the stigma "mentors are trash" comes mostly from forums, with people playing the game on a higher level and knowing more nuances than the avg player, facepalming themselves about statements/advise their newer players pick up from the NN and tell them in the fc or from first hand

imo a good mixed FC is always better than the NN
if you're lucky you most likely have savage raiders (they still can be "trash" but likelihood is lower) and casual players which can provide way better advise as the meme channel NN is

also make sure to check out the nerd caves like the Balance discord since they crack down jobs and content

If you have mentors in your daily roulettes and they are bad, there can potentially be a different reason for that aswell: They have been running that content for months, maybe years at this point. When i go my weekly Aglaia run, you bloody bet, i have some youtube videos running, that i pay more attention to, than the boss.

And then, yea, there is also that point of not knowing every fight in detail, which is perfectly understandable. I can better describe this on WoW: i spent 10 years clearing every content on its hardest difficulty. By the end of a content, i had ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ memory left, of what the bosses in the previous content were doing. It's just unreasonable to expect someone to remember everything about every dungeon or raid

from my understanding most here know this and just meme about "hehe mentor died to ez mechanic"

but the bigger problem is that they just give borderline half assed answers and advise to cure 1 spam in level 70+ dungeons
most healer sprouts i had from the NN told me they got explained to do it "this way" in the NN which in the end >hurts< all of us

no sprout needs to know their perfect job rotation etc - no one says so
but the mentor just isn't helping most of the time for battle related content and dont know their own tool tips

There is a mount associated with Mentor status and the mentor Roulette, so people who have no intentions of being a mentor, and just want to speedgrind the mount, are the most likely type you'll run into.

Solution: Clears for Mentor Roulette mount only count if you receive at least one(1) commendation.

Also revoke the status permanently of any Mentor who says "This content is normally done in PF"

Problem is: Is the statement wrong? The quote you've put in this post is a conclusion based on general player behavior. If nobody does extreme through DF or very few people do, is it wrong to tell someone "This content is normally done in PF" BASED on community behavior?

Not sure why we would punish someone who speaks a statement that's generally true.

It’s true for current extreme content, not for older extreme content. In the case of ARR and Hw ex content, a lot of the players who play the content are on free trial and can’t create a party with PF. You’re literally telling them to spend the next few days sitting and watching PF on the off chance that someone happens to make a party for the content that they want to play. I PF. a lot and I can’t remember the last time I saw a synced leviathan ex or shiva ex. They aren’t really done through PF.

When someone tells a group of people who are currently doing an ex trial through DF that no one does extreme through DF, what they really mean is “I want the mentor roulette mount and I only want to play easy content”. They’ve often only ever done the old content unsynced and think that everyone else should do the same.

So I killed Ew ex3 200+ times while
mount farming but when we get to the end of Ew and it enters mentor roulette, I won’t have completed it because I only did it through PF therefore didn’t get any commends?

There’s enough commend begging already and I don’t think this would help.

Just did Ifrit ex in mentor roulette last night with 7 green leafs, we cleared second pull, they all followed my instructions and we had good DPS, even skipped the first Radiant Plumes. The healers even kept their distance.
