FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

6.2 Breaks Launcher for Linux - Please Leave Your Report Here
Well, here we go again.
6.2 launcher breaks linux compatibility again.
Never loads the page.
Please leave your report here so we can start a thread and let folks know if you got it working.

EDIT 8-29-22:
Proton Experimental Bleeding Edge now loads properly.
To enable bleeding edge, right click on Proton Experimental go to Betas and enable Bleeding Edge.

Editing original post to add relevant info:

XIVLauncher is a good workaround for now.

From prinln (thanks bud!):

How to manually obtain macOS client video files until the XLCore Flatpak is updated - fix for "Could not obtain Process Handle"
Note: Terminal commands assume default paths and settings.

Go to your FFXIV install and then enter the game/movie/ffxiv folder.
cd ~/.xlcore/ffxiv/game/movie/ffxiv

Download https://mac-dl.ffxiv.com/cw/finalfantasyxiv-1.0.8.zip
curl https://mac-dl.ffxiv.com/cw/finalfantasyxiv-1.0.8.zip -o finalfantasyxiv-1.0.8.zip

Extract the required bk2 files from the zip
unzip -j finalfantasyxiv-1.0.8.zip "FINAL FANTASY XIV ONLINE.app/Contents/SharedSupport/finalfantasyxiv/support/published_Final_Fantasy/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/SquareEnix/FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn/game/movie/ffxiv/*.bk2"

The extracted files should be in ~/.xlcore/ffxiv/game/movie/ffxiv.
There should be a bink video file for each wmv-encoded dat file.

Make a blank file called .fixed in the game/movie/ffxiv/ folder. (this is your ff14 game folder, not .xlcore one)
touch .fixed

Cleanup anything you don't need
rm finalfantasyxiv-1.0.8.zip

Additional notes for FFXIVLauncher:

There is an install on the AUR, it does work and installs the latest version.

It's best to edit the launcher.ini to include your game directory or the game will try and install in the xlcore dir.

the relevant settings are GamePath and GameConfigPath. You do not need to put quote marks around directories with spaces.

You can backup your profile / FFXIV config data before screwing around to prevent any data loss. The directory is here:

<driveLocation>/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/39210/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn/

Your profile is usually a folder like FFXIV_CHR00############## or some such.
The FFXIV.config and FFXIV_BOOT.cfg can be useful to backup as well.

Make sure you have added XIVLauncher to steam through Games - Add a Non Steam Game to the library and then you should be able to run it from steam with no special flags etc.

from notaek1 (thanks for this):

To get FFXIV Launcher installed as a flatpak on Ubuntu first open a terminal then enter the command:

sudo apt install flatpak

it will ask for your password, after that is entered follow any prompts

Next you need to add the flathub repos this command should add them

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

at this point you will need to log out and back in

to install FFXIV launcher flatpak re-open a terminal and run the command

flatpak install flathub dev.goats.xivlauncher

and you should be good to go

Like I said, try playing the game on a real OS.
whats a Real OS ? just wondering are you talking about Windows or macOS. FreeBSD ? i mean what is a real os .. they are all OSes and clearly all Real right.
For anyone, like me, who doesn't have a clue about XIVLauncher, I followed the simple instructions on this webpage: https://flathub.org/apps/details/dev.goats.xivlauncher

I'm now able to play (but I had to redo all my macros and hud settings).

Yep I've been using XIVLauncher and it's been working well. I want to point out that you can actually copy over all your character settings, hotbars, HUD Layouts etc. from a previous install by following this guide: https://www.gameskinny.com/hca94/ffxiv-how-to-transfer-character-settings-binds-and-hud

The trick here is to open two folders, the Steam config location and the .xlcore/ffxivConfig location. Then you can mostly follow that guide for Windows. The trick is to just copy all the files like ACQ.DAT, COMMON.DAT, HOTBAR.DAT, everything.

To be safe, copy the current character folder to another location just in case you mess something up.

Hey Im sorry I don't really understand the computer talk but ive been trying to get in my game for like a week and have been unable to I keep getting an error and I have tried everything suggested online and I mean everything to fix it. (besides this computer soft as i am soft brain and don't understand) It wont get past the Main screen since about the update and keeps loading before I get an error are these issues connected or am I on an entirely different issue?

Mango, if you are using windows you are in the wrong thread. It's their dynamic resolution "feature" though most likely. I have bad news for you, you need to either upgrade/hack your directx or stub out their "feature" in ff14 client drawing pipeline. Either requires a lot of expertise

Actually I might help you. It seems DXVK supports windows too, https://rk.edu.pl/en/using-dxvk-on-windows-to-improve-final-fantasy-xiv-performance/ try it and report the results.

To give analogy for not technically savvy DirectX is like internet explorer of 3d space rendering. DXVK allows you to switch your system to Vulkan which is NOT internet explorer of 3d space rendering.

Look at all the people who continue to use Linux despite it being unsupported!
As usual I will continue to use Windows and CONTINUE to have NO login issues.
Hehehehe :steamhappy:

Your opinion is irrelevant in this thread move on.

I personally enjoy it. Me just using linux and playing this game on it is passively applying vuln stacks to some people's cheeks. It's a sight to behold.

In case anyone was not aware, you can report trolls by clicking the arrow in the upper right corner and select Report This Post. In the text box just add 'irrelevant trolling'

No need to respond to trolls in any other manner.
Let's keep this relevant!

Current Updates: I tested the latest Proton Experimental update that came through and issue is still ongoing.

If you are seeing your settings dissapear after setting up XIVLauncher as a work around, please look at your launcher.ini file and check the directories, most likely this is pointing to the wrong folder and wasting space for you.

the relevant settings are GamePath and GameConfigPath. You do not need to put quote marks around directories with spaces.

The game is not supported by linux.
That's not a troll post that is a fact.
Move on from your useless linux and use windows so i dont have to see nerd threads like this every patch day.
Thanks kids.

Darn wish I'd read this before getting the launcher running. Already setup everything from scratch but thank you nonetheless.

Remaining subbed to discussion for fixes to the original launcher however as I don't want to use third party applications to keep it working.

And noted, trolls won't get a response but I'd happily report them for deliberately antagonising users in the thread.
I launched the game on my deck and logged in through the official launcher, it just took like 3-4 minutes and there's no immediate indication that it's doing anything.

It's not worth using in lieu of the xivlauncher unless you have the patience of a saint but it is technically usable.

I tested this today and waited for a total of 6 minutes on Linux. The launcher never got past the FFXIV screen so maybe this is steam deck specific?
