- You grew up with FF franchise
- You really like group encounters in MMORPG's.
- You like dailies.
- You like one dimensional classes, so you don't have to figure much out ( I don't mean this as a negative, it is whatever floats your boat. In a game it is about fun after all).
- You like the anime theme for world building, story and classes.
Don't try FFXIV if :
- You don't like content being locked behind story progression with a lot of trashy filler in between. (This pisssed me off).
- You expect a lot of character class customisation. (To me the lack of this is boring, but you do you.)
- You expect a modern MMORPG with all the quality of life changes that were brought to other current MMORPG's like TESO, GW2 etc.
- You don't like ability bloat. FFXIV just adds more abilities with each expansion. Sometimes it will make you wonder why.
- You don't like classic tab based combat. (I am ok with it, but just don't need a gazillion different abilities with hardly any difference in effect (not meaing FX)).
- You tend to create alt characters and expect account wide unlocks (There are reasons for it, but I know some really like to create different looking characters).
Personally, I think that as MMORPG it feels quite outdated. Also, I don't care for the FF theme at all. I did not grow up with it, so there is no nostalgia for me.
I also don't like how they mix and match different western fantasy tropes and historical settings in a way that makes the world sometimes look like a fever dream. They even put in scifi in a way that kind of makes the enemies in ARR kind of stupid for not being able to win without any effort at all.
I have about 800 hours in and this reflects most of my non-story-based criticisms.
I forgot about the ability bloat; as a person who likes to play with keybindings, having 30+ abilities is a nightmare. I had 1-0, shift + 1-0, ctrl + 1-0, and additional keys on my keyboard all set to abilities... for every single class I played (all the tanks, so these were relatively ability-light by comparison to most classes)
Just to avoid being entirely negative, I want to mention that the game did feel good to play when I finally figured out a layout / control scheme that worked. IDK how people play this game with controllers.
I was wondering how it worked out too, especially healer and having to heal fast.
I really hate theses Threads.
Why?
Because your prolly a Wow 'refugee' and looking for another game. You saw FFXIV as a 'flock to' and you wanted to know more and even decided to press the community to prove to -you- that you should join the game, but you do it with contempt. Well you will get no love here. Your interest is your own, your research is your own. Your want, will and desire, is your own. FFXIV is a game that will not only span 20 years of content, but will also be amazing. Jump in, or don't.
Anyone whom actually cares will do their own research.
Those making threads like this are asking for an argument, and are flame-baiting.
Which is against the Community Regulations in the Forums.
That's not a lot of time for an MMO.
Mayor is right.
200 hours in a game is not enough to fully explore it.
If it is an RPGMMO like this one, Mayor and I are pretty high up there on 'fleshing out a game' at least in regard to FFXIV. I have nearly 10k hours and Mayor has more. So just take to heart when we tell you that this game is -totally- worth the effort, regardless of your hesitance.
Even if what you said would be true, that just means you are adding fuel to the fire with this comment. While I assume the positive side that the OP just wants to see our reasons for liking or not liking this game, you assume the negative.
As for the amount of playtime needed for exploring a MMORPG. That can be thousands of hours for some ppl ofc. But to discover whether the game is your thing, you only need a fraction of that. Not even close to the 200 hours the OP mentioned.
I don't see anyone doing that, just people pointing out that 200 hours for an MMO isn't really noteworthy.
The guy who really needs to "touch grass" whatever that means, is the guy who tossed a bunch of generic and non-applicable complaints at the story--the game's main draw and what earned it so much praise and accolades--and declared that anyone who doesn't agree with him has "low standards."
You must not read these forums very often.
There have been enumerable 'sell me this game' threads, and their only intent it to cause trouble. They aren't making these threads with positive and constructive language in a well thought out manner, they use words that are automatically combative.
"Sell Me This Game Change My Mind About MMOs" is right from the start argumentative and attempts to force the community into a corner, as if the burden of proof is on us to make them like something they already don't. This is called Flame-baiting, and it is against the Community Regulations, as a ban-able offense. Additionally, if the OP really wanted to learn about what we thought, there is this nifty Search button, that can answer most all their questions, as this thread type has been made enumerable times, and some even give the OP's the benefit of the doubt, regardless of their use of language.
