Can't play the game after purchasing
I played this game years ago on a trial account and just purchased the starter edition through steam. Downloaded and installed the game through steam and the launcher appears asking for my info. So far so good was able to enter my old account info and the registration code but it makes me go to mog station for the final part?? It says "Transfer to regular service has not been completed."

I go to this dumb mog station thing and I go through the process to transfer my account to the full version and to put my registration code again but I get a dumb error: You cannot use this function. Please contact the Square Enix Support Center for additional details. Error Code: i2501.

The code is a generic code given apparently an issue with payment but I already purchased the game and all I'm doing is registering the code.

I do some reserach and I fold on the NA square enix site that upgrading from trial to full is being blocked in the mog station because it's being abused from 25 Sep 18. How the hell am I supposed to play this game?

The code isn’t generic. That error is produced due to their fraud detectors going off. There’s several possibilities.

1. Your IP address does not match the region of your game code. This is common with VPN users and Steam users who cross region buy.

2. Your credit card information does not match your region. For instance trying to make a Japanese account with an American credit card.

3. Your browser is giving off a region not matching any of the above. There are many reasons this can occur, a browser refresh often fixes it.

4. Your firewall is messing with your browser. Add an exception for the website.

There are others but I find these most common.

The news you are referring to has nothing to do with your case. That is only for people trying to purchase the game through mogstation.

It even specifically states outside purchases still work:

“We apologize for the inconvenience, but when upgrading to the full retail version, please purchase a digital or physical copy from places such as the Square Enix Online Store to make the transition.”

Mine falls under number 1 then. I live overseas and bought the NA version. What do you do in that instance?

Easiest route is to refund the game, repurchase it under the EU region and then you’ll have an EU key. (Or should.)

TBH I recommend buying the game off Green Man Gaming as an EU account, it’s an EU site and friendly and you won’t be tied down by the Steam restrictions. If you need Steam overlay just add the game as a non-Steam game.

It won't let me refund the game on Steam because consumable DLC. Assuming it's the subscription but I can't even register the game

It will let you. Just keep at it. I see refunds on this all the time.
