Subpar story, terrible writing, bad quest design. Why FFXIV is overrated.

As the title implies, FFXIV has to be one, if not the most overrated game ever. I know the fanboys will get their panties in a bunch and feel offended (as if I cared), but denying its flaws turns the devs complacent, more than they already are.

Quest design is just bad, tedious and extremely boring. To solve just one quest you have to walk to and fro and talk with at least three NPCs, all of which will go into lengthy platitudes that do little to advance the story or resolve said quest. Bad writing is bad, these quest chains could be easily solved with one NPC and way less self-indulgent exposition.

Speaking of bad storytelling, the plot has never been good. It's vague, horridly and needlessly ambiguous, and at least too long by half. Endwalker wins the cake here. To make matters worse, in addition to poorly developed 'villains', it turns out that by the end you must and have to feel sorry for them because they're misunderstood, never mind that one of them is schizophrenic and the other one a sociopath, both of them genocidal. It's ridiculous, there's no payout and only fake and far-fetched catharsis. I'm actually sorry I spent so much time on this travesty that Yoshi-P has dared to call 'game'. If anything, it feels more like the selfishly fulfilled fantasy (pun intended) of a failed writer and subpar programmer.

Totally agree about story and quests. I mentioned before that my experience was only with ARR and the reply is that it gets much better. You only have to trudge through 40-50+ hours to get to the good stuff. Now that I have unlocked Machinist, AST, DK, I am not touching msq for a bit as it just wore me down. Back to leveling jobs and enjoying the game without msq. I still like the game quite a bit.

You're going to hit a brick wall doing that. Without access to areas you can't reach until later in MSQ, not only will that leave you undergeared for later levels, it will also leave you without several of your post-50 abilities, since the job quests that unlock them require you to go to areas locked off by MSQ.

Yep, just leveling all the jobs I currently have unlocked to 30/50 so i can clear out some armory inventory which is bloated right now as I did a bit of crafting too.

It's clear you've not actually played it past ARR and only heard snippets of the rest of the story, but with that being your experience of the game you're not wrong about ARR. If you play beyond it you'll find it a better written and more fun experience.

Maybe if you compare to some other single player games, but if you compare to other MMOs, unless you're solely talking about ARR, your opinion will be very unpopular.

I know it can be really disappointing to want to like something because your friends/other people you know do and it turns out that you don't. Especially if they've been hyping it up like woah. I had a similar experience with Buffy: the Vampire Slayer back in the day.

I wish you well in finding a game you do like, so that you don't have this weird compulsion to invest time and energy in something that you aren't enjoying.

You might find this thread more productive if you tell us what you DO like, if you're having trouble finding one -- people could then make helpful suggestions of games you could try instead.

Don't hate OP everyone, after consideration of his Profile Name "Wookie" i have come to the conclusion that he is a bitter SWTOR player who is heart broken that his game is on life support and has been declining story wise since the Knight Expansions.

It looks like what we are seeing is another example of someone burning out in ARR before they become a walking advertisement for the game.
