Question about build diversity / equip diversity
Hey everyone,

I`m interested in the game, but I`d like to know, if this is a game where you can play each class "your own way"?
1.) Does every class benefit from all attributes? (Can you do a strengh based priest for example?)
2.) Can a class be played really differently compared to the same class played by someone else?
3.) is there special equip you need for hard content? (like armor with a lot of fire resist)
4.) Is equip you get from quests / dungeons bound to specific classes? or can all equipment be worn be every class?
5.) is there any other form of character diversity? :)

There is no build diversity in this game. Likely stemming from a design choice in wanting to get away from FFXI's core "Mechanic" of having a gear set for literally every situation, to the point where you would be swapping entire suits of armor and weapons mid-battle, FFXIV has a very linear and rigid attribute scaling system.

Even classes that should be able to take advantage of certain stats, like Dark Knight which CAN benefit from both Piety and Spell Speed -In Theory- are locked away behind arbitrary class restrictions (In the case of Piety) and a tiered, negative scaling breakpoint system for the other stats. (EG: You need more every level range to maintain the same CD's or %'s)

1: No, only direct hit, critical hit and determination benefit all classes in some way, some more than others. Skill speed benefits all physical classes while spell speed benefits casters. Again, the benefits depend on the class.

2: Not really, there's a rotation you must follow but there are ways to increase your DPS by playing around with timing of your burst phase to line up with raid buffs including your own buffs.

3: The game gears you up for content quite naturally, it's mindless tbh.

4: Yes all equipment is bound to specific classes except no-stat glamour stuff.

5: There's quite a few races to choose from yes, but the actual character creation isn't as in depth as some other MMOs, but you still got choices and the hair selection has grown over the years and you can unlock new hair styles and change your look paying in-game currency (literally pennies)

Build diversity results in players making poor choices and inadvertently locking themselves out of group content. There is a correct way to play each job in FFXIV. There is a BiS gearset for each job, and it gives you the stats that you need to do well. You can add materia to further increase the stats of your gear but I'm not sure why. There's very much 1 correct way to meld your gear and lots of wrong ways.

I don't think there will ever be any build / equip diversity unless they go the FFXIV 3.0 route and remake all classes.

Considering we're on 6.0 and they actually did remake several jobs so far...

I like the idea of more variety. But at the same time the current system comes pretty close to ensuring you won't get a bad party member that can't contribute. In all the duties I've been grouped up for, I've never had a group that couldn't complete one. Sure, sometimes we fail, but we can just try again to get it done.

No and I'm so glad there isn't.

Build diversity in games like MMOs is a terrible idea.

People will either make a build that will gate them off from content or one build for each class will become the best one ultimately nullifying having a build diversity system in the first place.

That's why we have the term "Meta"

Then you don't do savage or extreme content with pugs lol

Yep, even those "build" games everyone parrots the same Metas. Til someone discovers a new gear set or weapon, that that becomes the new Meta.

The game is different for the fact One character can be any class at a press of a button.
You don't need multiple characters for classes in classic MMO setup.

What makes FF different is that your one character can be any of the classes.

They didn't spend time on specs or specialties in each class to make multiple build types for one said class. For good reason, that kind of system you end up with the flavor of the month cookie cutter builds between patch tweaks.

You don't need to worry about that micro managing of skills like classic mmo's did.

Now if they throw in the old school "dual" job system, we can talk builds. =) That was the old MMO of FF. Ninja tanks =) Samurai/Rangers Good old days....

you will find your focus more directed in the story, the adventure, hunting, or simply achievements, mount hunting...much to do and less focus on building...more about adventure

I can't speak much for savage but I have done the extremes tons of times with pugs with very occasional issues and those groups tend to break up anyway

I come from GW2 (waiting for the addon rn) and there is a huge build diversity. While there are a good selection of meta builds for different activities the build system allows to change the way you class plays significantly. For example i have 4 builds for my main there that all play siginficantly different.
Im not sure a build system like that would work for ffxiv but i would not miss it in gw2.

Extreme is more than doable, same as savage tho in a lesser degree.
Just because you're gonna have an easier time with your static doesn't mean it's impossible or something.
Att: someone who pugs ultimates when bored
