Upgrade Free Trial to full game on Steam, Help!
I started playing FFXIV by downloading the free trial on lodestone/Square Enix so I guess I made my FFXIV account through Window Service version of the game. Now that I'm nearing the level cap and finishing ARR, I'm hooked on the game and would like to upgrade to the full version. I would like to have it on steam when they lift the restrictions but I've read that the version that I have is incompatible with the Steam version. I was thinking of transferring my account from the windows version of the game to a steam version but I guess I can't? Am I understanding this correctly?

I think it is possible to upgrade any trial to Steam version but that's it. After you are
locked.

EDIT2 and credit to salkcid at reddit

"Buy the game on steam in a usual way —> In steam client (library) right click on FFXIV then choose 'Manage' then 'CD keys' (or just click 'play' and you will be prompted with these keys) —> copy keys and go to mogstation —> login —> choose 'Upgrade to full version' —> choose 'Enter registration code' —> firstly enter the code of standard game (you will be redirected to steam page where you should login) and finish transfer —> on your account page choose 'Enter Expansion Registration Code' and do the same with expansion code —> now all that is left is to uninstall trial version and install the game from steam"

you can't. And I play on steam a lot and FFXIV works fine on here. And you can't transfer but ffxiv is not being sold at all on any platform.

You can, but people think you can't, even support say that you can't. But somehow you can.

It's still ridiculous how they bothered to make this game cross platform but they can't support logging into your account if you bought the game on Steam or Lodestone. Even the game itself is riddled with obscure limitations everywhere which is likely how they get around having to fix a bug, just limit you from doing what would cause the bug lol.

I think you can no matter what people say

i dont know why peoples still say "you cant register your trial to steam if you downloaded the launcher from the SE site"

you can, i did and it worked. slanesh is one of those guys which saying "well, then you had luck and you had a bug"

no, i have by now multible friends which downloaded the launcher first from the SE site, played the trial and then bought it on steam.

all you need to do is just simply downloading the steam launcher instead and stop using the launcher from SE. the steam launcher will then say that you have no license for the game and gives you a link to the mogstation--> click it --> get your key from steam --> enter it in the mogstation --> mogstation sends you to the steam page where you have to login into your steam account, abide to ToS, aswell verifying if you really want to do that cause once you went from trial to full on SE or Steam version can you not change it, you are then forever stuck with steam or the SE site version. --> anyways, afterwards tells you the mogstation that from now on ONLY! steam keys work on your account. that means, if you buy one of the addons NEEDS IT TO BE A STEAM KEY! always!!!!

the adventage of having the SE site version:
well the starter version is overall cheaper then on steam and SE has on their own page the addons way more often on sale.

adventage of steam:
ya can use your steam wallet, so if ya make money through trading here have you a good time for paying your subscription. the disadventage is that addons here are rarely on sale and therefore overall more expensive.

I started with freetrial standalone version and was able to buy the full version on steam just fine. This was a little after Stormblood came out.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I heard that you can go from the SE trial to the Steam full version. The other way around ISN'T possible - you can only go from Steam trial to Steam full version if you started on Steam - but SE Trial > Steam full version should definitely be a thing. Not really adding anything constructive to the topic apart from being yet another "well ackshually" person.

Why would you want to convert to a steam account? Honestly curious here. I'm on the free trial through Squeenix site too. I just didn't see a need to tie it to my Steam account.

Steam wallet payments could be a good reason for someone to choose steam vs standalone.

As iirc you have to be on the steam version to get that option on the mogstation.

with steam have you aswell access to paypal... which you dont have with the SE version cause they dont have paypal as payment option. and lik taran said already (me too) can you use your steam wallet. with other words, if you live in a country where the 60day cards dont exist can you buy a steam gift card instead and putting it onto your steam wallet and paying in that way your subscription or via paypal.

i choosen steam cause SE wanted a weird signed copy of it that they are allowed to get money from my bank account ... sending that over would´ve needed 1week+ ....
i have no idea why they just dont do paypal too.

Paypal does take a percentage. But then so does steam. But I suppose they figure they will sell more copies through steam due to advertising and exposure, but not so much through Paypal.
