FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

Is this game reccomended even if you don't care for the story?
I'm trying to find an answer for this for a few weeks now. And I either find nutbars screeching about how they don't want me to play "their" game if I don't appreciate the story or people bashing the game for every little thing they can find.

I also don't care about the community too much. I mean, I like to be part of a living world, chatting every now and then, watching people do their thing and help them when I see they are in trouble but don't necessarily want to embrace it like forming friendships or joining guilds. That's way too much commitment for me. Communities in MMO's are often too cult minded for my liking. And from what I've seen (especially since the MMO refugee's arrived) that is in fully blown development now.

I'm more interested in gameplay here. Pure gameplay. Anyone here who can help me? I mean whenever I search for articles about this or ask people about it all of the answers ALWAYS revolve around the story and how great it is. Rarely anything else. I don't want to deny that truth but it just isn't something I care about.

--- Edit ---

Seems I have to make clear that:

- I don't HATE story. It's just not the highest priority for me. A story, and may it be the greatest ever concived - will not make me keep playing if the game itself is not interesting for me.

- I don't HATE people. I'm just way more introverted, cautious and not able or interested in making "friends" left and right as it stresses me the F out. Does not mean I don't want to be part of a community in some way.

Honestly I would say no for sheer virtue of the fact the story is where alot of the development goes. You can play if you don't care for the story but you will be missing the biggest portion of content the game has to offer.

This game is hugely story focused so thats why the articles always mention it, thats the main draw of it and where it targets its audience.

... Why would you play a heavily story-based MMO if you hate story and reading/watching story? And why play an MMO if you don't care for group content and the community?

Just play a FPS or something if you don't care for story and just want gameplay.

You can definitely find things to do. Although it might be tougher without a free company(guild) if you want to do high end raiding.

Raiding is straight out of the window for me. Too organized, too high expectations. Especially in MMO's it's always "You play that class? Great! Use the spec we tell you to or don't even bother joining"

Whenever I play MMO's I have the most fun doing crafting based jobs, doing daylies, exploring the world etc. I take things very slowly. And when it comes to the social aspect look at it that way: I also like to go to the city centre I live in irl just to be around people without necessarily havin to interact with them. It's exactly like that. It's just interesting.

Well you will find crafting is actually very good but it is gated behind the story for your vendors etc.

Can I ask tho why not care for the story if you like exploring the world? Alot of the story in this game is exploring each zone you enter and how it ties into the over-arching plot.

just how tightly balanced it is and the combat feels better than any MMO I've ever played

It's not that I hate stories or anything, like that "Just play FPS hurr durr" specimen said. I'm just not as receptive to stories in videogames. A great story is always the icing on top and never the main course for me. It's hard to describe. Chances are I would even like the story but it's way more important that the stuff outside of the story itself is to my liking. And that's VERY hard to find out with all the "either you love it or you hate it" people I came across until now.

The way you approached this entire thing conveys you don't like story or have no interest in it. You can't really be surprised that, in a game that's heavily centered around story and narrative, the community would tell you that you won't find a home here.

tldr: No.
It is typical mmo. Dungeons, raids, daily quests, crafting, housing. Also something, that from a far looks like pvp.
All progression locked behind main quest line(a.k.a story). You will need to go throu all that quest line, so if you dont give a frak about story it can be veeeery boring. World is static, there is nothing to explore.
Better try ESO, if you ok with its visuals. Much more pleasant expirience for solo player.

You’ll get a feel for what story to skip through and what is worth taking in pretty quickly.
randir14 Dec 14, 2021 @ 12:29pm
I skip through all the cutscenes and don't even know what's happening in the story. As an MMO it feels very impersonal, unlike something like WoW or EQ where you got to know your fellow players on the server. Basically you just go around soloing quests until you're forced to do dungeons with random people to advance to the next set of content.

I can only speak for myself but I'm currently lvl 58 going through the Heavensward MSQ's. I really couldn't care less for the story (it's actually pretty terrible imo) and I'm starting to lose interest fairly quickly. I also have no interest in joining a guild and doing high end raiding but if that's your thing, you might find some enjoyment in it.
