To progress through the MSQ and a majority of side content you do not have to actively search for others to play with and most of it is done completely solo without the need for other players.
However, there are parts of the MSQ that do require you to group up with others. You do this for the MSQ content by queuing up in the Duty Finder for it and running through. Duty Finder pairs random groups together and you can do other content while waiting for the game to find you a group. Most groups are completely silent through this and know what they are doing so it's not a huge issues.
SE is changing a number of duties to allow for you to run with a group of NPC's though this is coming in bits and pieces starting with the next major patch. Not everything that requires other players is getting this treatment.

I'm someone who prefers to play single player as well.
That doesn't include Crystal Tower or Trials, so the answer is, in fact, no, the entire game cannot be solo'd. And it's not from April, Stormblood isn't getting trust support until 6.5 and that's going to be Winter 2023 at the earliest.
Nothing has been said of the three 24 player raids that are required though.
