Buying Steam version (Already own PC version through SE store)
Good evening all, I had a question regarding the Steam version of this game. Back when I bought FF XIV in 2014 I purchased it through the SE store (and up to date all the expansions through the SE store as well). I would like to have the Steam version simply for the continuity (having the game page in my library, achievements, tracking, etc). If I buy the base game and login with my current login information, will that work? Or would I have to buy base + all expansions through Steam?

You need to buy base game and expansions again through Steam, it doesn't carry over.

EDIT

Also, Steam version doesn't have achievements, cards etc. Only time tracking. Just so you know.

I posted this in a older topic asking almost the same thing

"I have a non-steam FFXIV account played on that for years then bought a FFXIV copy * I still have to buy xpacks on the square store * on steam and I can still login to that client with my non-steam account. You just have to use steamedit and remove the "issteam" from the arguments and you're good.

And to answer your other question you can still access everything by only buying the base game on steam. I only bought the base copy on steam and I can still access all my content no issue. "

Just to repeat myself.

1. You only need to buy the base game on steam as long as your account has xpack codes already applied it will just patch it when you login in regardless.
2. You still have to buy any future xpacks off the square store.
3. You DO NOT have to buy any xpacks on steam. Nor do you want to.

However I do not know if the steamedit removing issteam will still work with the upcoming change but as of right now it still works.

So I am going to necro the ♥♥♥♥ out of this post but..
I have the exact same issue, I bought FFXIV off the Square Enix store years back, then purchased it again off steam.. because I wanted the UI the hours played.. screenshot ect. I can easily remove -issteam argument with steam edit. But after a few days / logins it always comes back and I have to remove it again.. and again.. and again. Is there a way, now that you can "connect" your steam to your FFXIV account to fix this issue for good?

There's no steam achievements

So honestly, I wouldn't bother. Steam doesn't offer any form of achievement tracking for the game. It is much more cost effective, and arguably less of a hassle, to add the version you already have to your list as a non-steam game.
unless you're hellbent on having a quicklink to the steam community, I wouldn't bother.

Yea, I have decided to not do it. Thanks for all of the tips!

all the same. I don't see the worth of re-buying a game through steam and potentially deal with the hassle of linking and/or unlinking accounts when that same title can just be added as a non-steam game, allowing you to access the Steam UI, and most of its features.

If there were achievements, any features present that aren't available anywhere else, or an objectively better launcher, I'd get it.
but there really isn't. I've heard way too many horror stories concerning linking Steam to a pre-existing Square Enix account to feel it's even remotely worth the trouble just to be able to use Steam's dedicated screenshot button as opposed to FFXIV's dedicated screenshot button.
hell, I can't even figure out how to unlink Steam from my trial account, despite having only been able to successfully play the trial outside of steam, so I can't even *begin* to think about buying a separate version of the same game.

I like Steam. but ever since they changed how the Steam launcher for the game worked, it's arguably more of a hassle to try playing the Steam version if that was not the first version you booted up.

The same SE account cannot own both PC and Steam version, as soon as one platform was chosen you cannot switch. I am not sure, with the new process of linking your SE account with steam that you can even login without owning the steam license on the SE account with the PC license.

I repeat: an SE account cannot have both PC standalone and steam version at the same time.

That, too.
looking into it, yeah. once you own one version, that's it. any attempt to purchase the other version is *literally* a waste of money.

But now.... we have a deck. In general I been a big fan original launchers for pc. Eso, ffxi, ffxiv. But now with deck. I just want to click and play anywhere. Not in front of pc.

You can play FFXIV on your Deck, PC and Steam version both work on it as they are the same exact game. Might have to do an extra step for the PC version as it's not on Steam, but it still works.
