WoW and FF14 are very different so dont abandon hope just because you dont like ff14, WoW also has a trial until level 20. FF14's is until 60 and you can do most everything thats available until that level (just cant talk much, use the market, and a few other things to combat bots)
This game is a bit of an oddity as MMO's go. It strongly encourages you to play through a long series of main storyline missions and content/feature unlocks are mostly doled out by reaching certain points in that story. Most of that storyline is also a largely solo experience with occasional missions tossing you into brief 5-15ish minute multiplayer sessions that are easy to complete without ever actually talking to anyone.
So if you're looking for a highly-challenging group-heavy game with pervasive social activity, those features do exist but in my opinion, they're less of a focus / less encouraged by game mechanics than they tend to be in other MMO's. On the other hand, if you're looking for a Final Fantasy game with some light social elements that you can optionally dig into further (or just want to slap on a Busy signal and play at your own pace without ever talking to anyone), it's about as good as MMO's get for that and might oddly one of the best single-player Final Fantasy games in years.
Like as a kid, I got into playing mmorpgs through WoW, Metin 2 and Perfect World. They for whatever reason just stuck with me. And now that taste landed me here haha.
Especially if it's free, give it a try. Which ever mmo you like best will likely define your tastes for them moving forward, if you end up sticking with the genre. I think it's more about just jumping in and giving things a chance, for more than a few hours. And not trying too hard to rush through things. Honestly with MMO's, just like real life, the moment you stop looking for something, what you really wanted will just pop up out of nowhere. Whether it's the right game, or the right group of people IN the game.
Compared to everything else I've ever played though, XIV definitely takes the cake for sure. And all of the in-game tutorials are VERY verrrrrrrry well explained. The community is super friendly and will go so far out of their way to help new players. If you're ever lost, you could go to any city (or the Novice Network) and just ask away.
As stated it's free and offers decent help to get started so give it a shot :) after you play it come on back and let us know what ya think!
