But just do like many others, skip all the cut scenes and keep hitting Ins on dialogues if you play on PC. You can always go back and do the MSQ again if you like with the New Game+ feature. Or just watch the story from Unending Journey book in your own Inn room.
But yes running back and forth starts to annoy many times but FFXIV is not the only MMO that falls in that same pit. But that ofc is no good defence why to do that.
In the end game is far being flawless but those kind of games are a rare breed indeed. Also I have tried and played all major MMOs and there are just no other that would come even close to FFXIV compared to overall quality and diversity of the content.
If you at least complete ARR pt.1 (2.0) then all the ARR endgame content will open up to you and that can be a nice change of pace to do as well as the part they really shine at which is EX trials, AR runs etc. Try and work on a balance of "The amount of MSQ's you can push through before burning out" to "What silly fun activity can I do to recharge with while also progressing in another way.".
This is how I coped, granted I did enjoy the story but I do agree that ARR does take mental endurance to get through almost like it is a test for the most dedicated.
And yes, I liked it too that the story is so slow.
Never was a big fan of storys like: Oh hey hero! Hi! First time here? Cool pick some flowers for me and oh btw kill that one god too ok? kk see ya.
This!
This is exactly the thing I loved the most when I started playing in the CB and this is the reason why I sticked with the game.
I had pretty much the same experience at the same time (getting tired of the Titan questline and finally looking up the list of story quests to see how much was left) and honestly, nearly quit right there. Almost everything I was interested in leveling crafting and gathering-wise was at 50+ and until then, I had no idea how much more of the story was left to go. That list of quests was... disheartening to say the least and the wiki doesn't even mention a couple of surprise mandatory sub-slogs near the end of it.
It was too bad because the story was actually getting halfway decent near the end of the original batch of content but with all gameplay progress screeching to a halt for 100+ quests, it was difficult to stay motivated. Frankly, I don't blame people for just buying the skips and getting it overwith.
At least most of the quests were just dull-but-quick 'go talk to a guy and collect your reward' affairs so while it wasn't very rewarding or much fun, it didn't take 'too' long to finish.
Heavensward is definitely much better in that aspect from both pacing and text perspectives, everything is much more to the point, pacing is really good and haven't encountered any side tracking so far. And music track of Heavensward alone is really relaxing and beautiful and goes really well with that cold snowly environment of HW. Truly a marvelous experience. Atmosphere, pacing, interesting dialogue, significantly higher quality VA, concept. It ticks too many marks, I had high expectations yet it managed to surpass.
