It has a new expansion releasing in November.
It is certainly far from dead.
Queues will depend on role, Tank/Healer tend to pop quite fast, dps not so fast.
I'm not particularly into pvp.

This game is one of the best selling MMOs out there currently.
That being said...
- The community in-game is relatively tame and friendly for the most part however you will surely encounter some toxic ones from time to time. This is also wholly dependant on which Data Center and World you decide to make home in.
- Queue times can be boiled down to, "It'll take a bit if you queue as DPS, Near instant if you rock a Healer or Tank". My advice if you want to roll as DPS starting out if you don't want to wait about 10 or so minutes for dungeon queues and the like? Make some friends, join a Free Company (This games version of player owned guilds) that's fairly active and has people willing to help you on the journey!
- PvP outside of anything related to "The Feast", and even then there isn't too much to be said, simply exists. Basically everyone is throwing their bodies at one another and a slew of randoms more than likely just doing it for the dailies and the like, it honestly makes for an absolute mess most of the time.
-Endgame content can be summed up as "How much damage you can deal and can you perform the mechanics when they come up?". Don't get me wrong all the fights are really cool to do and stuff, but all the "hard" endgame fights is just about pattern dancing and dealing enough damage to the boss before their set hidden timer goes to 0 and does a party instant wipe. Sounds easy enough on paper, stupidly hard when actually attempting to run. Also look into having a static group when doing the content as well.
So wrong lmao.

FFXIV is even being beaten by Runescape if you combine OSRS and RS3 lol.
If you combine 2 popular mmos you can get more people than in 1 popular mmo? Shocking?
Also, not sure why people would care about the total number of accounts instead of the number of active players. FF14 is the most active mmo at the moment, according to that site.
https://mmo-population.com/activity
Where the hell did that site get nearly 120 million WoW players from? Blizzard doesn't even advertise that many, and every "join xx million players" ad for every MMO is all about inflating the numbers as much as humanly possible
Also, if difficult endgame instances are not your cup of tea, there are also many other things you can do during the endgame, like relic weapon grinds.
They get the '114 million total players' statistic from all of the tens of millions of undeleted necro account toon data still gathering dust on their servers, many of which haven't been actually subbed or played in over a decade or more.
That would be the same as super market reporting every visitor in their existence as active customer
BTW, if you compare this game to other MMO on steam, it's still the 2nd best out of 4.
Usually pop wise is
1. BDO
2. FFXIV
3. ESO
4. Albion
ESO will soar through the sky beating FFXIV when there's a sale, just like weeks ago, and then plummet down to its usual pop.
FFXIV's PvP is pretty much dead except you que at peak times/reset time. FFXIV's population is way higher since they region block some SEA countries such as Philippine, Indonesia, etc.
Requiring them to use VPN to register an NA/EU account which is a huge bottleneck because SQ's site can detect vpn and you need to wait for 24 hours before registering the same email if you fail, many backed down after facing this issue
Also steam's version and the standalone version is different, you can't buy DLCs from another version and apply it to your version of the game.
Finally FFXIV's editions are way cheaper than steam because they sometimes do sales and people stockpiling the gift codes resulting on cheaper price compared to buying the non sale version
