Players gatekeep in every online game. Even in FFXIV. Look at some of the threads in this forum that get piled up arguing that a given poster has "toxic" opinions. What is that if not gatekeeping, tyring to reduce the amount of undesirable behavior in the community?
Not that ganking gatherers is gatekeeping at all. That's just the game being played.
The only argument I'm seeing crop up against open world PVP is "I don't like it." Would it be such a bad thing to include servers on the next hypothetical Final Fantasy MMO that were clearly marked and featured open world PVP? Then you wouldn't have to touch it and the people who like it could enjoy it.
We're not talking about Final Fantasy 14. This thread is about what features players would want from a hypothetical new Final Fantasy MMO, just calling it FFXVII for convenience's sake and the "pattern" of a new MMO every three games.
Yoshi's statements on the direction of his pet project are irrelevant to the discussion.
What I would like in the theoretical next installment is more class diversity, more unique class buffs/debuffs/skills. And maybe the NPC companions a la SWTOR or upcoming ESO update. IIRC, FF14 1.0 even had something like this.
As for PVP, I really like idea of Dark Zone from the Division series. Integrating something like that would be neat.
You answered your own question. People like it because they can kill new players.
The base game coming with NPC companions you can take into dungeons Trust style would be great for players who want a mostly solo experience. Maybe reserve them solely for instances though. I've played a bit of SWTOR recently and it gets silly seeing everyone running around the starter planet with the exact same hulking brute beside them.
I don't much care how you behave in-game, only inasmuch as you seem to be a hypocrite. If ganging up on someone and attacking them until they leave is wrong in the game then shouldn't the same be true on the forums? Somehow it's okay in one of those places but not the other. I just expect consistency from people. It's a fault of mine.
You ascribe motivation to your imaginary new player. "They only want to play the game peacefully." What about my previous comments asking for clearly marked PVP servers? If someone joins such a server they know going in that they are likely to be attacked randomly AND YET THEY CHOOSE TO DO SO ANYWAY. For the challenge? Because it's fun? Because they want to do it themselves one day? For any number of reasons.
If someone is getting upset that they're being killed in the open world too much, they can switch to a PVE server. As long as there is an option for people to choose to not engage with open world PVP then no amount of arguing about "toxic" behavior is going be compelling. They have to deliberately choose to take a dip in the toxic pool. Do you have any argument as to why there should be absolutely no option for a form of PVP that many people enjoy?
1. It is the worst time to make a new MMO.
- Not only because FFXIV's success if growing, but because we are in era of changes in tech field (ray tracing, mesh shaders, directstorage) that will have profound impact on way the games are designed long term. It is best to let these technologies release and mature before making a new MMO because a game that utilizes all these will look extremely good. We haven't had so many new technologies (which change game design at a core level) release at same time like this since like 2008.
2. Action combat
- Mostly a personal preference, I just enjoy it so much more than tab-targeting.
3. More focus on PvP
- Another personal preference.
4. Fully voice acted quests
- Given that amount of voice acting has increased rather drastically with every new expansion, it wouldnt be too far off to assume that a new MMO (which I imagine 2025 as the earliest possible release date) could come with full voice acting.
Hell no. Yes, personal preference but I get straight up issues after WoW PvP.
Genuine subscription mmo with no cash shop will never be the case again. Weve been proven far too easy to milk
Then I'll likely never buy another MMO again. Too many genres have fallen to greed. MMO, Fighting, and Sports. All new releases in these are ♥♥♥♥ and I avoid them. Look at the recent New World pay to win announcement? Madden in sports? Street Fighter in Fighting?
If i had to nit pick it would be better graphics.
