Nobody talks?
Played every other MMO on the planet and veered away from this one because I wasn't a fan of 'cat girls'. Anyways, found the game on sale and went ahead and bought it. I was surprised to find that the stereotypical anime tropes aren't so pronounced in this game which is great. Started playing yesterday. I honestly love this MMO and wish I started sooner.

Fast forward to today (played the game non-stop); I'm level 34 and I haven't seen a single person speak in General chat.

Is there a general chat? Why is everyone so silent? I've visited every crowded town in the game and couldn't find a single person speaking in chat. Tried talking in chat myself and couldn't foster a reply.

Why not join a free company or something? I find general to be a spammy cringe fest in other games.

There is no world chat. There's zone-wide at best. Say is local.

There's not much to talk in open area anyhow. Most ppl out questing/killing monsters will not be looking at chatlog anyhow. And default chatlog is such a crowded ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you wouldn't see anyone talking unless you change chatlog settings first.
You would see more ppl talk in big cities tho, like Limsa or Ul'Dah. Also, what world are you on ?? It's pretty active here on Balmung.

it really depends on the area you're in. the widest chat reaches is shout chat and that only reaches a single cell of the game. so say you're in new gridania you won't see shout chat of old gridania. even though they're basically the same place. they're different exterior cells.

Honestly I never understood where people thought the game was anime heavy. As far as mmo communities go ffxiv has a pretty good one. Now if you want crazy then go visit uldah on balmung. chat's crazy there

well the closest thing to a general chat is the novice network. Some just become mentors in order for the chat to be there

Yea FF xiv is tons of Mutes or console players its kinda boring..either join Alliance or find some friends or you will be only with mutes and script hot key spams...

I think you need to go out and be actually social, instead of just screaming in Limsa about not finding the General Barrens Chat. Often, people in /say have nothing of interest to mention anyway, so I can kinda get why you got ignored. This is also why most people will just talk in /party in the city states, less intrusion by randoms.

Try joining an FC or just talk to randoms standing around dungeons and queue with them as you talk.

Join a fellowship or a Free Company. The Company I'm in loves to chat a lot. Most of the time its a blast to read the log. I find my self laughing at some of the stuff said. One of the things I like about FFXIV is most players prefer to message people directly instead of public it. But /Party chat is also pretty common if you type something.

I would b e careful with that, especially as a new player. I joined one and they were spoiling so much in chat, despite several people (myself included) asking them not to share them. I ended up having to leave. Happened to me on three different occasions. Just worth noting about NN.

Thank you all for the help! I have made a bunch of friends now. They're helping me with the levelling process. Love this community.

Not a fan of "cat girls" but has a Goku avatar... Kinda hard to take you seriously.

As for general chat, people don't talk in public channels outside major cities (Limsa seems to be the most common social gathering spot on every server). As others have said, join a Free Company. Not sure if you like larger guilds, but they tend to be a lot more sociable.
