Yes, I'm bragging. But my point is I know the genre and I am a hardcore vet.
I'm 200hrs into FFXIV and I'm in love with it.
atm I barely scratched the HW, because I love the vibes of the game so much, I'm playing at completely opposite pace I usually do. First time in my life. Spend days in Golden Saucer, crafting everything or just listening to bards playing in a capital.
Story is definitely not a masterpiece for a couple of reasons. Firstly it is a story in a MMORPG. We should give it some slack (as with every single other MMORPG).
Second because it is made by Japanese people. All japanese and Asian in general plots are err... different. It is often hard to not cringe, to understand or just to like them as a westerner. (If you, future commenter don't have any difficulties with it, it is cool. Often I do so as well. But truth is truth). So, if you don't get it, if you are not used to these ways of asian storytelling by watching tons of anime, for example, like I did, it is totally fine to not connect with this story. I get it.
At last, there are of course some plot holes and stupid decisions made by characters.
My first and last points are objective cons of the story. Second one is the grey 50/50 zone, that makes the story in the game actually good or terrible. I've learned to like the story of the game and enjoy it.
I disagree with your points regarding gameplay, but I will ask to them later, have to go afk.
The MSQ dungeons are easy because they have to be designed so that everyone can get through them. The optional endgame ones are harder and then you have extreme/savage/ultimate to really challenge yourself.
I'm not sure what your problem with aether currents is. Why shouldn't flying be a reward for exploring the new areas? Seems reasonable to me.
I'm also not sure why you think that paying a sub means that you shouldn't have to do quests? Do you think you're paying so that you don't have to play the game?
Let me emphasize I did not say whether or not this game is good or bad simply because as stated I am not an MMO person, I don't think it's fair for me to judge it.
I do admit the combat can be engaging at times, but the Quests are the absolute most dull moments I ever had in gaming.
The "why keep going" is a great question, it's why I made this discussion.
Not sure what's with your talk about "posting crap" Cult.
But you just said I wrote a "spam of text" or whatever because I criticized your game. So to me, you're part of my aforementioned Cult.
Fans kept posting "spam of text" praising this tedious game by its very, very mediocre story literally everywhere and if they have the right, so do I.
My problem with Aether Current is it's just yet another thing to do for people who just want to explore the story.
Especially since story was the main selling point for me, because a lot of FFXIV fans on many different mediums and gaming boards were like "FFXIV is the greatest story ever! Play it as single player RPG! Even if you are not MMO person! Just endure ARR (100 hours content) and stick with us, maybe you get Stockholm syndrome or be victim to sunk cost fallacy!" which seems so false to me.
The paying about sub complaint is simply because this game feels like it does not respect my time at all. And you know I am right, because the devs apparently cut a lot of content themselves.
---
My plan right now is to keep playing until my sub is over, but damn, do I feel burnt out.
Should I just watch YouTube videos for the story?
Thank you all for your input.
Why make a discussion if you already have the answer then...
Then you are saying that you know that you are wrong but choose to stay wrong.
"Posting crap", as in making the same post that appears several times a week around these forums, using the same arguments by someone who doesn't really want to discuss since that someone already made his decision...
You try to antagonize me in a pretty childish way. I didn't said that you wrote a wall of text because you criticize a game I play (I don't care about what you think of this game, I'll play if I want to ^^ ) , but rather because you actually wrote a wall of text.
You don't even realize that you are the exact stereotype of a member of the cult that I mentionned ^^
Again, same exact behavior as every other threads like this. You already decided that you will stop playing, so you try to stir up some drama on the forums to entertain yourself.
That is the only reason that someone would actually ask if watching Youtube cutscenes of a story he dislikes would be better than watching them in-game, with context, your own character, etc.
Have fun with your topic, it will be locked or erased in a few days anyway.
I said I made this discussion to have an answer whether I keep going or not.
At least read what people are typing before going full judgmental.
Nope. Still don't get you.
I don't spend my time on Steam discussion boards other than if I want to post something, so I could not care less about what gets posted here and this is not even remotely relevant to my discussion.
The rest is you literally accusing me of things you are doing in the very moment (sorry you have psychological projection issues), jumping to conclusions (who said I made any decision?), being illogical and pre-judging again.
And are you really saying I am the one who is antagonizing the other side in a childish way... Really?
Work on your logical fallacies.
I am not here to attack anyone and certainly am not the childish one. I already said if people have the right to post their positive opinion _everywhere_, I also have the right to my voice my opinion in a civil and mature manner.
I am sorry my opinion seems to be popular then, I had no clue.
Maybe stop over-hyping this game's mediocre-at-best story especially when it's a dull snoozefest full of chores that does not even respect the players' time (emphasize: person who is here for the story, not an MMO person)?
You can say it's a great MMO but don't go on trying to sell it to people by saying "Play it as single player RPG" or "It has really great story! Just endure 100+ hours".
If my topic gets locked or deleted this just speaks volumes to FFXIV staff, but I don't think it will.
---
Please, do not post more if this is how you are going to be.
Otherwise mature and reasonable discussions can be had like with the two other posters.
This is a genuine discussion post, I don't mean no harm.
Only you can answer that.
I can tell you all day about how I was in the same boat back in old pre-fixed ARR of treacle slowness when it was worse than it is now, and how my view still did a 180 at X point in the game, to a point where FFXIV became hands-down the best MMORPG experience I've had over decades of gaming and MMORPGs via Shadowbringer, but that doesn't mean any of it will apply to you because you're not me. You may hate the entire thing.
Nobody has the right answer for you. You have to find out for yourself, or decide whether it's worth even trying.
Else do you have YouTube videos to recommend that cover the story?
If you don't like it, you're allowed to not like it? But you can quit insulting the people that do, particularly if you're actually interested in a discussion as you are claiming. It's hard to have a discussion with somebody who starts out being a jerk and then plays victim when people are testy with them -- and claiming people are in a cult, or that the story is objectively terrible and anyone who likes it is dumb, this IS insulting and being rude towards anyone who does like it.
This thing of flaming and being nasty to people from the outset and then going "why can't you be mature and discuss this reasonably with me surprised pikachu face" is...distasteful. Try treating the people you don't agree with with respect; it will change how people respond to you fairly significantly.
Expecting other people to be better behaved than you are being yourself is not very realistic.
Couldn't disagree more.
It's an MMORPG -- meaning it will always go forward.
It has peaks and valleys every expansion, all of which have their own stories - not JUST the MSQ, which is merely the main stage. My turning point had very little to do with the story at all, but it turns out I thoroughly enjoy it anyway and had more laughs/tears in Shadowbringers than most games/movies I've played/watched over the last decade. That has no bearing on whether it'll be the same for you. You're not me.
You're looking for a one-note definitive peak as a way to judge. Honestly, you are never going to enjoy the game if you're that microscopic about it. I vote you walk away and stop looking for a set turning point if it hasn't gripped you already.
But I think yeah, maybe the game is sadly not for me.. I will wait until my sub ends to decide that.
It is not a single-player RPG -- but it can be played like one for the most part. The MSQ only demands the odd dungeon or raid/trial, but is essentially a string of solo-content, with the player having freedom to do whatever they wish within their unlocked content.
I have an ungodly amount of hours in FFXIV and most of it was spent by myself and thoroughly loving it, but also digging into group content here and there when the mood takes me.
It is why people call it an RPG-MMO rather than an MMO-RPG -- but that doesn't mean it is NOT an MMORPG at its heart. It absolutely is focused and built around group-content -- but there's enough to resemble a literal SP-RPG experience despite that, mostly thanks to the solo content and story.
This is subjective, just like 'fun'. Alas, you'll find that the humble majority absolutely do agree that the story is good, if not excellent, and there's a wealth of content from both perspectives you can check out on the subject.
Don't fall into the trap of assuming that something you don't like is automatically 'bad', just like you can't assume that a drove of people saying something is 'good' means it'll also be good for you. You are not them. You have to make up your own mind.
I can list you an ungodly amount of MMORPGs I've invested in over the years and still regard Shadowbringers as the best MMORPG experience I've had, but that's my personal take. Plenty of people will agree or disagree, and that's perfectly fine.
Honestly, you're past it. I think if you don't enjoy the journey of dirt farmer -> hero, and you aren't engaged with the Heavensward stuff pretty much immediately upon arrival in Foundation, you aren't going to hit a moment that does it for you. The parts I found compelling...probably aren't going to do it for you, if you're as far as you are into HW and no notes have been struck. I was still at the Rising Stones when the first bits that got me got me. The Eozeran Alliance storyline I found sort of 'meh' except for the emotional drive to find my character's friends, but the Ishgard storyline got me right away.
The story IS great after ARR, is the best story in a video game that I've played, and you can ALMOST play it as a single player RPG (dungeons/trials are required by MSQ, so idk why anyone would tell you you could do it solo). I am an example of the person you are insulting with your cult comment; I am choosing to ignore the insult in favor of explaining to you why it is insulting, since you claim that you're interested in a discussion.
Nah, man. Your post was super insulting, whether or not you intended it to be that way. There is plenty in what you said for somebody to be frustrated with. Saying mean things with a calm tone and seemingly reasonable words does not make it any less mean.
SWTOR tried that, but they had to heavily mainstream the plot for DLCs. And there had never been much to do.
WoW had lost its storytelling and character\worldbuilding somewhere around Cata (with Legion attempting to somewhat redeem the plot, but then they pulled Sylvanas&BFA). And don't even get me started about the rep\time-gating of what remained of the "story" content, even for the outdated expansions. Pandaria key plot is still tied to the daily repgrind, and you won't even know that it's there unless you read guides.
LoTRO used to have decent writing, but it's 2021 and they still can't figure out how to make their fonts and UI usable in 1080 (let alone 4k). It's extremely outdated. The Secret World? Mistreated and abandoned, along with its contemporary\supernatural setting.
And here you are, saying, that FF story is bad. It's flawed and MMOish to extremes, no way around it. But can you honestly name a single MMO with
the comparable QUANTITY of the story\NPCharacters content (quality - it's a matter of tastes, after all) AND comparable zones (scale, design) AND character customisation options AND tons of minigames AND advanced, yet not mandatory crafting system AND housing system AND dungeons&raids lv scaling AND viable LFG\LFR system AND lack of the time-gating or mandatory grinds for the story content progression?
If you DO know such a game, please let me know.
Technically, it's a full-scale AAA-single-player-sized game with MMO elements. Different people like different stories, and it's ok not to like ARR\HW storytelling. Personally I loved both, some bits more than the others. They reminded me of the classic BioWare single-player games, which is not a bad thing, since we're unlikely to see yet another "Dragon Age Origins" (or even "Inquisition") from BW. I also hear that FF14 is very much alike with the older FF titles, I had not seen most of them because I could never tolerate the awkward jrpgish menu-style combat (and I've been playing my games on PC).
