Check your DPS.

I know that DPS meters are frowned upon in FFXIV community, but how do you benchmark yourself in group instances? How do i know if i'm slacking in a raid or if i'm popping off?

Nowadays it is easy to tell if someone is doing bad or not. There is this new trend that people don't use AoE's in big pulls or if you watch their attack animations that they are not doing the correct combo pattern.

People blame for the lack of DPS meter but no that is not it, it's just knowing how your job plays and don't half ass it. I also use ACT but everyday when using it, keeps getting more and more difficult to not get annoyed by the number of people just blatantly doing ♥♥♥♥ because they want to get carried.

So, use ACT to improve yourself but be careful not to give yourself away when you see someone just there for the ride without contributing to the team, be smart about it if you need to confront them.

i dont use my aoe most of the time as black mage since the damage is absolutely terrible so far (level <60) all my triggers are linked to single target skills with like 3-5x the potency. only if theres like 6+ enemies maybe. still feel like im doing top dps though cause when theres 2 enemy's i can kill 1 faster than the other 3 do the other lol

BLM is one of the very few classes that can do that in SOME cases, but in almost all situations, the damage from repeatedly casting aoe spells, even as BLM, is going to add up to more overall damage in the same period of time once more than 3 enemies are present.

in my opinion if the dungeon boss dies and we still walk out of there i consider it a win even if it would take half an hour or hours as im not in a rush. I learn more by watching what enemies and bosses do, than read the guides, just how im wired since older era, its also more exciting. Mmo's should be about the journey, not endgames.

We do though, we use them a ton.

It just gets you in trouble if you talk about them in-game and gets you banned if you berate people with the data from one.

Oh how wrong you are, DPS meters are there, they are being used, people are being judged because of poor performance.
