Alt job gearing question
So i'm almost done with all patch quests on my main class (DRG) and i've always wanted to branch out to other jobs and level them, but i never did. But now that the expansion is still a few months away, I figured i'd waste my time leveling a few other jobs.

However the main issue I always find myself having is gear. Especially with different jobs starting at different levels, how do you properly gear them while you level? Is there a certain trick to leveling alt jobs?

Any tips in regards to this is very welcome.

I just buy the white gear at vendors and then gear up while leveling from dungeon loot. Literally only buy the white gear once, and the rest comes from dungeon loot. Those early dungeons are so easy it doesn't matter if you're under geared. And sometimes I'll use the weapon or armor from class quest rewards, but usually I already have a better one from the dungeons. Then you just save up those poetics and get the lvl 50 Ironworks, and lvl 60 shire gear, and 70 scaevan.

The latter ones, do those last long enough? Like will ironwork last to level 60 and shire to 70?

The only time they would start to be less than maybe the best-in-slot gear would be maybe towards the last 2-3 levels before the next change (e.g. 57-59) and even then only reasonably so if you're using a tank class since you're handling the brunt of the attacks. However, even this can be handled by melding materia onto the gear if you want to. Each type is pretty reusable. For instance, the one you buy for your tanks can be used for all of your tanks, same for healers. DPS are a bit different since they split between melee and ranged and I believe ninja and dragoon have their own?

Ah yeah that makes sense, so just trying to optimize it with gear that's shared between classes, that's actually pretty smart. I'll just level tanks first, then move on to something else.

Yeah maybe on the like lvl 57 dungeons you'll start finding better gear than the lvl 50 Ironworks. But it's not like you need to urgently replace all of them. It'll just just naturally and you'll be 60 before you know it lol. Also, you can run PotD, where your gear doesn't matter one bit. I've only recently gotten into potd as a leveling tool, so it's going decently, since I often get matched with people who are like maxed out aetherpool. But once your aetherpool gets high, it'll go even faster.

In PotD, your gear and level doesn't matter at all. You start at level 1, and your gear is replaced with stats called aetherpool arm, and aetherpool armor. As you go along, you find silver chests that upgrade it. I'm at arm +57 and armor +62. I just run floors 51-60 over and over lol. But you will start by running 1-10 and should maybe reset until your aetherpool is at +10 or so, cuz after that, there's a chance that the silver chests won't even upgrade it. As you get higher aetherpool, lower floors have less and less of a chance to upgrade you. I didn't beat floor 50 until I was like +25 or so. After you beat 50, you can do 51-60, then reset, and start at 51 again.

For sure, can save you a lot of time and money. Course you have to invest the time to get the tombstones but it makes it worth the effort when you share them among the other jobs.

Good point on Palace of the Dead, definitely can be a good path to leveling up. Heard that leveling up with Grand Company Squads can be a decent way to level up early on as well but man I don't have the patience for the AI lol

How PoTD works? It's like roguelike right?
I tried it once to solo it, got dead on 8th floor.
Do EXP given for floor completion?

Personally don't like doing POTD for leveling classes since It doesn't actually teach you how to do that role in dungeons, but yea, Every 10 floors you complete you gain a ton of exp for your class.
