Dragoon
My goal is to be a Dragoon when I can. I started a Marauder. Do I need to restart as a Lancer, or can I become a Dragoon with my Marauder? Thanks!

at around lvl 10-15 you travel around to other towns. talk to the lancer guild and you will be on your way toward becoming a dragoon. ( it's a class change )

A single character can be every single job. You just need to unlock the job by visiting their guild (you can visit other cities at level 15) and then you swap back and forth between jobs (classes) by changing what weapon you're holding.

Lancer > Dragoon is in Gridania. So you're going to have to stick with Marauder for a just a bit more while you progress through the story.

Each class has their own levels, so you're going to have to grind a bit to get back up to 15 (at which point dungeons also slowly become available as you level further)

FATEs and any quests you haven't done in the other cities starting zones is a great way to catch up. If you head out the south gates of Gridania, you'll end up in the starting area for that city.

Keep playing Marauder until you can unlock Palace of the Dead. Then join the lancer's guild as others suggested. Lancer will start at level 1 and POTD levelling is very, very fast. Use POTD runs to catch back up to your MSQs

Or just reroll and start as lancer if you are still low lvl. It might be faster, especially in the case that Marauder is not to your liking.

Don't reroll just to save time unless you're really curious about the Gridania story. As the others said, you can be everything in this game, and POTD will very quickly get you back up to 15 and beyond.

Also this post is from Aug29 so I guess you already know what, whoops.

Is there a reason someone would choose to stay a Lancer, or do most go to Dragoon when they can? Is that even an option?

RP would be a reason or the challenge/meme of not equipping the soul crystal.

No. You're not getting the abilities your job is designed for.

Can you do it? Sadly... yes. It is not impossible to see a player who hasn't figured out how soul crystals work, or just skipped their job quests forever. It is not great for performance.

You have to wonder, with this being the case, what is even the point of this design decision anyway? Why not just permanently change the job?

Some would say for lore reasons since you are wielding the soul crystals of a vet from said classes for power/wisdom/history/determination etc etc

Some would say it is for original job design reasons where you have branching paths for classes...though so far it seems only to be applied to Arcanist with Summoner and Scholar paths...

Some would say its for merchandising reasons so people they buy replicas of it in SE store...

I wouldn't be surprised if they did this at some point when overhauling things. You already auto-equip the crystals when job changing.

Some of the jobs do, not all of them. When switching to samurai for example, it automatically equips soul crystal. But when you switch to Dragoon, it won't auto equip the soul crystal. You become Lancer first and have to manually equip Dragoon Soul Crystal. This goes for all starting jobs that have a lvl30 soul crystal (pugilist/monk, marauder/warrior etc) as far as I know.

Job system is nice, but the jobs themselves are not well designed in this game imo, apart from nice looking abilities if that's your thing.

You need to re-save your gear set with the soul crystal equipped. If it's not equipped when you save the gearset, it won't save, but if you do save with it equipped, it will automatically do it for you. Dragoon absolutely DOES auto equip.

You are certain of that? Because Monk and Warrior don't. When switching weapon, you also manually have to equip the soul crystal.

Saving a gear set is not what we mean here btw, This is also kind of pointless when still levelling.

You missed the point here. We are not talking about gear sets. We were talking about which jobs automatically equip soul crystals when switching job through weapon. Some of them do, some don't. And why this is from a design pov.

Besides what would be the point to save gear sets during levelling. You would have to keep saving new gear sets almost every level when you get better gear. Just pressing recommended works well enough during levelling (but that doesn't equip soul crystal for some jobs, which is just stupid).
