1) Dragoon has three Jump abilities that take control away from you briefly to launch you at your target, as an animation lock. If you're reckless with them, you can divebomb right into AoE attacks... especially in later expansions where attacks are cast much faster as the game difficulty picks up. Jump even gets an upgrade during Shadowbringers to speed up the attack/ease up the animation lock.
2) Originally, Dragoon had less Magic Defence than the bulk of the jobs in exchange for higher Physical Defence. Sometimes, you could just die to an onslaught of party-wide attacks (typically magical damage) or even a regularly occuring big boss cast mechanics simply because you couldn't have the Magic Defence to survive it. They changed this fairly quickly because it was ridiculous to basically be expected to die during some fights, even with the best armour available.
3) Dragoons dying a lot is also an infamous joke in FF11 due to suffering a whole slew of problems there too since the start, from what I hear of people that did play it, which fuelled people outright expecting similar treatment in FF14... and not being let down for a good while.
4) Have you played with some of the Dragoons in Duty Finder that still don't know how the job even works in lvl 71+ content and keep this joke alive? It's downright maddening what kind of players you can run into, especially if they're wearing the Burger King Mentor Crown, sometimes.
Short answer: because DRG locks you into an animation while jumping, meaning you can't really move to dodge an AoE during the jump. They were made much faster, and DRG is not constantly dead anymore.
There is nothing wrong with DRG as a class anymore. If you enjoy it, play it and make fun of yourself when you die.
In some instances (when we lost a tank temporarily) I even took over as off-tank
And I can kind of understand that some people don't get Dragoon high level play, it is a LOT of work for the return you get compared to, lets say red mage or ninja (or monk where I almost fall asleep playing)
So they would die pretty fast. Tanking the floor.
It's been worked on a lot, but in return it might feel like the least involved DPS class because time spend improving other classes was time spend just trying to fix DRG.
Latter makes sense since you can't backflip over a gap even if you reached a solid plattform with it.
I see, I see. I'll keep this in mind when I get around to leveling lancer.
Thanks for the replies, everyone. I know it's not as fun to have to explain the joke but I appreciate your help understanding the meme.
Still, this can be exploited - character strictly follow floor during "jump", so you can fall down from any height instantly and without taking any damage. Haven't seen any way to get advantage out of it though.
Honestly, I like the jumping abilties on dragoon because they look cool and provide mobility that melees can never have enough of.
