I was able to, when did they change it?
Wish I'd known it was possible.

Well that's from a year ago and top comment says you can.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/hg9zvh/how_to_upgrade_nonsteam_free_trial_to_steam/
This is from two months ago and also says its doable.
That's why I didn't see it. I only looked on the main FFIV page.
So it goes.
I did the transfer in a few minutes, the second reddit link explained how to do it.
but I will speak quickly and in a few steps, I am using the google translate, I hope the information is not lost.
------------------------------------------
1) go to the steam app, and add ES FFXIV as a "non-steam" game.
2) on the square moogle website> your acount> transfer to service (or almost)> pc (don't be scared off with the steam option off)> registration key> use the CD-KEY you receive once you buy the game.
3) download the game laucher via steam, open the folder for both ES and STEAM launcher.
4) copy the game's "boot" and "game" folders via ES. and paste it into your steam FFXIV folder.
5) log in to the steam laucher
6) be happy
steam = steam
windows = windows
Supposedly, but I wouldn't bet my account on it, and don't recommend that anyone else do so. =)
IIUC it is not possible to do vice versa (steam free trial to website paid).
If you want to have a really high chance to loose your account go ahead
a trial account (if created on the square-enix site) is able to choose its plattform freely when they choose to go into the full version.
all they need to do is buying the game for the plattform they wish to play on.
for example: if you wish to play on steam, buy it here on steam and enter the key in your mogstation, your account will then turn into a standard (steam) account (you should pay aswell attention to the process, 1 mistake and you have a problem).
this is only possible if you are a trial account. it is not possible if you own the game already.
with the steam trial is it different tho, if you started your trial here on steam are you bound to steam, you cant change your steam trial into the windows full version tho.
this slaneesh dude spreads this missinformation since ages.
i told him for example in the past that i went from the SE trial (aka i made my account on the SE page and had a windows trial) into steam full version. he called it a bug and that i was "just lucky that it worked".
SE even say´s on their own that a trial account can freely choose the plattform on which they want to go when they buy the full game. the mogstation even warns that it is possible but theres no way back if you do so and you cant revert it.
if it wouldnt be possible would there be no need for such warning in the mogstation, telling you that upon verification of the activation key will your account permanently change into a standard (steam) account and you can not revert it.
tho, the can not revert it is slightly outdated too since they offer a 1 time unlink from steam since steam can cause unexpected issues when peoples dont pay attention during the activation process (such as linking the wrong service account or the wrong steam account).
tho i think it has consequences such as loosing all characters etc.
oh yea. i forgot.
when you do this need you to use from there on the FF14 launcher from steam, the one from the SE page wont work anymore and just telling you "you have no license" that means, you need to download the ENTIRE game again.
so, it happens that they either link the wrong service account to steam or the wrong steam account to the service account.
peoples often forget (or flatout ignore) that the square enix FF14 launcher wont work anymore afterwards and need to use the steam FF14 launcher instead.
another part of peoples which say this think that you need to fill the 1 time password even tho you dont have one and then~ your account gets locked. (but it says clearly optional)
peoples avoiding the steam version because:
-its way more complicated to get an account running then without steam because 1 mistake and your account is in trouble.
-peoples dont want to read a book (thats how they call it, even tho its just simply paying attention to link the correct service account to the correct steam account) to register an account
-and well, if steam has ever problems to verify your login token can you not play. this usually can happen every week between tuesday and wednessday since they do server maintenance. but, if you manage to hit those few minutes ... will you fail to login. this includes all other technical issues if steam ever has some and it affects the login token verification.
with other words, technicly is it better to just stay with the windows version. i would say that by now too because i choosen steam backthen only because SE had no PayPal option ... which they now have.
