If you don't own the Expansion
Lancer \ Dragoon
If you own the Expansion Samurai
Dragoons are generally very fast and good at dodging the enemy AoE attacks and such.
Ninjas have a lot of utility but arent as fast as dragoons, they also have stealth which can be nice for things like Eureka and any future equivalents, as well as exploring and gathering silver chests in the deep dungeons
Samurai have high burst damage and are easy to play, but their movement abilities cost them their special energy which will give them less to spend on damage moves, and they bring little utility to the party. You also don't unlock this class til lvl 50, and the simple rotation can actually make it kinda boring and repetitive, though it's also a good learning class. It does have some mental hard class quests though, especially early on.
Likewise, monks bring little utility to the party, they have a charge move that doesnt cost them any energy but they don't have a disengage so little overall mobility, their attacks are dependent on directionals which is annoying to play and can run into problems when an AoE marker is blocking the boss from the direction you need to hit it from, forcing you to wait and lose dps, and their optimal rotation is annoyingly complex
Therefore I would say to pick either Dragoon or Ninja, I think Nnjas are generally preferred more, but the high speed of a Dragoon is fun to play when they start to unlock their moves, only I've heard they don't get many of their fun moves til 50+ so it can be a slog. Ninja get their fun moves faster, and their class quests are quite fun
NIN used to be a good choice too because of TA, currently however they parse extreamly low, so low that it's beter to take a high parse job over NIN even with TA.
Hopefully SE bufs NIN soon.
Anyway either DRG & MNK, DRG is favored a bit more (mainly for the crit buff) but there are loads of DRG's out there and double jobs will give you a LB penalty. So it's good to have both.
And for tanks both PLD & GNB parse really high, though WAR & DRK are good too.
It kind of depends what substats the craft gear and savage gear will have when it drops in 2 day.
If there is loads of DET on the tank gear for example I can see WAR's beeing higher again.
^The above is for current high end prog. If you don't plan on savage raiding pick whatever melee job you like.
I recommend to create your character and pick LNC or PGL and then go unlock either GLA or MAR as soon as possible (I recommend GLA).
Then you can do the MSQ on your LNC or PGL and you can do the dungeons on your tank class so you won't need to wait a long time.
SAM is also a pretty good pick for casual solo content but you can't unlock that untill you are lvl 50 with any job.
Maybe you should consider one of the tank classes instead of a DPS, but you did ask for DPS.
Samurai is a valid choice, but only if you're level 50. If you are, and asking for suggestions, I would recommend it over Dragoon.
I'm new to the game but planning on playing all the classes. I come from a Korean MMO that required players to roll an entirely new character to experience another job/class. To ruin through the entire story without an EXP boost.
My advise, start with Dragoon or Monk and go from there. If you don't like one, learn the other. Look for the beginning quest line for those classes and learn them. Once you learn them, then you can swap from SNM to Dragoon or Monk at will.
The only thing you need to be mindful of when playing as a DRG is that you are animation locked during your jump attacks, which can be devastating since you can't dodge enemy AoEs.
If I do get back into the game, i'll go lancer/dragoon.
And eventually try all the classes, see what works for me.
Dragoons are not better at dodging then any other class, Not being an idiot and standing in the fire is all that is needed to be "good at dodging aoe"
Dragoons and Ninja's are liked as they bring team utility whereas Samurai has none and MNK has very little.
However that being said play what you like you can't start as Ninja base class(Thief) though and you don't get Samurai until you get a job to 50 so those are the only caveats. If you want to be a Ninja easiest way is to pick a class that starts in Limsa as once you get the ability to change classes Thief class is based out of Limsa
Unless you're aiming for top tier hardcore content most classes are viable for use and as a general rule you'll do a lot better with a class that, while not being in the meta, you are more comfortable and experienced with than trying to force yourself into a meta playstyle that might be awkward for you (not to mention you'll probably have more fun that way).
