Why make a sequel? Just keep adding updates and expansions, the expansions are basically sequels. No need for them to do the EA FIFA method.

The only Final Fantasy games with sequels are X and XIII. Also, this is a MMO, and one that prints a lot of money for SE. They already have three MMOs running right now, no reason to add another

Well, we can only theorize what will happen after the announced 6.0 being the finale for the current story. They announced in some live letter that 6.0 or 7.0 would be the end of the story and that they will continue somehow if the game is popular enough.

Still, I highly doubt that they would make a new mmo game on new or upgraded engine any time soon.

Because an MMO takes a lot of time, money and resources, and has a high risk of completely imploding on itself in failure.

Well, if we simply go by release date, FFXIV was released ten years after FFXI and two years before the last FFXI expansion. So I guess the tenth anniversary for FFXIV is somewhat close. Still, I wouldn't expect a whole new game within the next 5-6 years. The situation in game dev and costs involved only grew exponentially since then. Maybe engine update or something at most.

Probably only 1 expansion left to this game tbh. Yoshi P has said in recent interviews the Hydaelyn/Zodiark story is 70-80% complete. Unless they plan to launch another major story arc I'd expect this game will go into maintenance mode in 3 years which would be 2 years after the next major expansion which is likely to release next year unless Covid pushed it back. I doubt they would say anything about another MMO until after the final expansion releases.

Wrong. They're going to wrap up ascian/hydaelyn/zodiark story stuff, since we can't be chasing ascians and talking chandeliers forever. You can't expect this to be the end when we have multiple worlds/multiverses.
Besides, FFXIV is among the most popular mmos, nobody ever would end a cash cow such as this. Thinking they'd actually do that is just naive.
We have potential story for years to come.

Although I really can't deny I would like to get a new engine, because limitations of this one pops up a lot, and you can feel the jankiness. Plus even the simple stuff like expanding glamour dresser space is hard according to them. Housing system is a disaster too.
