Just a few comparisons:
WoWs 13€, Eso is like 15, swtor too is 15 (those aren’t primarily sub games but I’d argue you need the sub to enjoy them to their fullest).
ff14 doesn't have this system, it is still cheaper than other game tho, that is true
most likely not, it's not like the game is dead in EU and NA, so I don't think it would bring that many players
I don't see it as win win in this situation. If some one wanted to pay the sub they would have done it like 3 bucks will make that big of a differance
ESO doesnt require a sub, period. Its buy to play. The sub for it comes in the form of ESO+, a VIP status that also unlocks all the DLC while you have it and increases EXP/gold gain.
FF XIV Could explore that kind of model if it starts to dip - theres a LOT of people that react viscerally to subs in general and going buy to play would make waves.
Look at games like Wt or wot or wows etc, lots of people pay sub for the premium which grants exactly the same benefits (exp and money bonus) and they are pretty much necessary in order to enjoy and properly advance in the game.
Those games too have more expensive sub prices BTW.
it becomes mandatory at some point if you want to properly enjoy the game.
It unlocks the DLCs the biggest contents of the game along with some really useful inventory space/bonuses, playing eso with no dlc would be like playing only the ARR version of ff14.
tbh, I like eso model just abit more than ff14.
I like having the choice to just buy 1 dlc that I can decide to do whenever I want.
Unlike ff14 when if I want to play I HAVE to pay a sub for a month, sometimes I would pay a sub for 1 month and play like 2 days because either I was playing another game with friends or because of work/irl stuff
In ESO you can buy everything except the rune bag with either real money or premium currency. ESO also has DLCs AND expansions, with expansions being much larger (stormblood/shadow level) and DLCs being things like a single quest line and a few dungeons.
Buying premium is not required at any point in the game to properly enjoy it - the game is structured as such that you need to make choices and cant just grind eighty hours and get maximum crafting, gathering, and all additional skills.
