FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

Any removed content?
Hi, I'm considering buying the game, but before I do I'd like to avoid the mistake I made with Guild Wars 2. I want to experience EVERYTHING, at least with my first toon, so if there is any content that was removed, like GW2 entire first season, I'd like to know.

Basically: if I start playing right now, will I be able to play all the same quests and get the same story as someone who has been in the game from the beginning?

Thank you for the answer. It helped me make my choice. Didn't even know there was any pre-ARR, but now that I do it's a dealbreaker for me :(

ARR (2.0) is a remastered version of the original FFXIV (1.0) so of course it follows a new story, since in the old game the servers were shut down with the continent being turned into a wasteland. ARR reflects on what happened and follows a new storyline with the people recovering from the events of the previous FFXIV, however the game in current state does explain what happened. If youre curious how the story of the old FFXIV was you can just read up a tdlr.

So basically a realm reborn (2.0) is a sequel of a failed mmo (1.0) and a completely different game.

You won't be able to see story of many many past sesonal events.
Also story of version 1.0 (pre ARR) is not available obviously.
Also some content may be slightly changed or removed (old PVP, Garo, Diadem).
Some minions are impossible to unlock anymore.
Maybe something else.

Pre-ARR was not much to speak of, considering SE had to re-make FF14 to save the game. They had a game and the solution was "write in a massive dragon meteor to make the entire world's destruction canon so we can make this not horrible".

Ok, I think I get it now. And looking at the wiki most events are recurring, except the promotional ones which I don't care for in the first place. I'll give the game a try.
Thanks everyone (except Ralf :P)

What You Need To Know From 1.0
In the last days of the Sixth Astral Era, the Garlean Empire launched a full out assault on the continent of Eorzea. The Allied Forces consisting of the three Grand Companies attempted to repel the invaders only to learn that the true plan that in order to end what the threat of the Primals forever they would need to use the power of the ancient Allagan magic Meteor. (Lore Note: The Allagan Empire was a technologically and magically advanced society that ruled Eorzea during the Third Astral Era.)

Spurred on by the mysterious beings known as Ascians, Nael Van Darnus led the VIIth Legion to Carteneau where they waged a bloody battle to cast Meteor and drop the moon, Dalamud, on the continent ending all life and the Primal threat. However, upon its descent it was revealed the Dalamud was no natural moon but a massive prison for the Primal, Bahamut.

This effort was thwarted by the sage Louisiox and his disciples, who called upon the power of their gods, The Twelve, to help stop Meteor and Bahamut. Though the Battle took the lives of many, including Louisiox, Bahamut was cast down and the VIIth Legion annihilated thus severely crippling the Garlean Empire. The destruction wrought by Dalamud and Bahamut caused mass upheaval in the land, altering the landscape and weather. This event became known as the Calamity. This began the Seventh Umbral Era.

Sorry, but all the fancy talk is wasted on me. The names alone confuse me. I'll figure it out as I go.
