Having fun on your new mount? feels good getting fleeced and show of you spent money on the game? I hope you enjoy riding it and take pride in that you ruin the game for proper players who actually want to earn stuff by playing the game.

Square Enix seems more interested in adding stuff to the cash shop rather than update the actual game. Must be pretty nice to have a customerbase that are excited about getting fleeced and proceeds to defend you while you empty their wallets.

Watch the people this applies to either:

- Say this is a troll post

- Say all the greedy monetization is optional therefore its okay

- Say we have to support the poor devs because buying the game/expansions and paying a sub is somehow not enough

And that's fair and valid. You can hate a company for whatever reason you'd like. But what gets me is when I see people on the ffxiv reddit saying how bad blizzard is for selling mounts and stuff in their cash shop, but also ignoring/praising it in FFXIV.

It's very double standards. If you don't hate mounts in cash shop, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it just as I am mine.

When they announced the store in the live letter, I bet you didnt watch it did you?

One of the top comments points out that rather than using Pa-Paya, it uses the same music as the Whale and Fatter Cat mounts. Meaning it was probably not meant to be the Hatching Tide mount, it's release just coincided with the event, and people seem to forget that spriggans aren't actually synonymous with Hatching Tide, they were just the theme for last year.

I've collected some info that might help to answer some of your questions. I have more data that I plan to present in a longer post at some point, but here's a start!

How much has been sold on the cash shop

The Minion Guide website gives a percentage of Lodestone characters that have various mounts and minions: https://minionguide.com/mounts. I'm not entirely sure if/how they filter characters, but it seems to scan everyone on the Lodestone.

Sleipnir is the most common cash shop mount at about 31% of scanned characters. Given it's an account-wide item, I'd guess that this represents somewhere between 150-250k active characters (based on the LuckyBancho scan numbers), or anywhere from $3-6 million. (That's for the most popular mount alone, but there have been sales a few times, so it's hard to nail down an accurate value.) The initial setup alone of the EU data center reportedly cost about $2 million, which is where some of the funds have gone. More info below...

Where the cash shop money goes

Yoshi-P has talked about where the money from the cash shop goes on a few occasions, most notably when they announced the cash shop during the Fan Fests in 2014:

Yoshida: With those funds we can do many different things for the game, for example, using that money to create more minions and more vanity items to include in the game and obtain in-game. Using those funds to create new vanity items and new gear, like the Spring Dresses. The profits can also be put towards creating more housing options, creating more servers, so we can have more plots of land. And also, the biggest thing is using these profits to create a better play experience for players by adding things like the new EU data center. The money that we get from these optional item shops we want to give back to the community. Source

It was also touched upon in explaining the NA data center upgrades and relocation:

Increased inventory capacity
Worldless (cross-world) party matching and friend management
Additional content & increased field size for new areas Source

Servers

Apart from the setup of the EU data center and the NA server relocation, they've also upgraded all servers across all data centers. Since 4.0 we've received over 30% more storage slots (from 762 to 992 total free storage slots per character) and a 200 slot glamour dresser, and 100% more housing (with Shirogane and the 4.2 additions the number of plots has literally doubled, not to mention the more than doubling of furniture storage space and the warehouse feature). There's also all the additional housing plots and apartments we got in 3.x.

In-game rewards

In-game obtainable rewards have generally increased since the addition of the cash shop. Note that "promotions" here includes things like Pre-order or Collector's Edition items. Holiday event items initially available in-game are included in the "in-game" column here.

For minions the difference between 2.x and 3.x isn't that big, but 2.0 itself accounts for all of it. If you compare the patches alone, 2.1-2.5 brought 51 in-game obtainable minions and 3.1-3.5 brought 68. The ratio so far for 4.x is obviously very favourable.

So we've clearly gotten more mounts in-game since the cash shop was introduced. So far in 4.x the ratio between in-game obtainable and premium is better than in 3.x even.

I have more detailed data on this and things like emotes, housing items, and glamour gear that tells a similar story. But it's a lot of detail to cover, so I plan to release this in a series of posts sometime soon.

Sadly even if Yoshi explained about the cash shop and why they have it, there will be people like OP and others that won't believe it because they only see a faceless businessman and hear static. If you try to defend the faceless businessman then you are a whale, naive and part of the problem.
