Far as I'm aware, every class is viable for everything. This isn't grossly inbalanced like WoW. Play whatever you want.
In reality, the best job is the one you play the best and enjoy the most. Your ability to play your job correctly generally outweighs other factors.
As far as solo survivability goes, Paladin (tank) and Red Mage (dps) are generally the way to go due to their decent damage and healing abilities.
Also, you cannot solo dungeons unless you are like 15, or more, levels above the minimum required, plus be wearing actual good gear.
About crafting, it's great, but it also requires as much effort as the combat classes (maybe even more). For money making, you'll need to check the marketboard in your server and see for yourself what is being sold, for how much, and stuff like that.
If you really want to craft, the best way to do it, in my opinion, is levelling up all crafting and gathering classes, so you'll get all you need by yourself, which saves a lot of money
Kinda wrong. You can easily solo x-59 dungeons and even a lot of the lvl 60s if you're decently decked out in endgame gear.
RDM is a favorite for that due to healing and burst capabilities.
Nowhere near top DPS. Very simple to play. I find it very fun though.
Eh. As a BLM main, I don't know. It's really pushing out multiple F4s before a very, very short cooldown phase. It's more akin to sustained at this point.
BLM is easily top DPS right now (and probably will remain where it is), with SAM usually close behind.
Summoner is the strongest burst DPS around right now due to its Bahamut phase and usually does a little better than MNK placing it on third place in the DPS ranking.
Of course those are only statistics. At the end of the day it depends on proper gearing and player skill (or in case of the BLM how much your party caters to you)
As a reference for OP, Red Mage is kind of middle of the road. Strong burst, but overall very weak sustained. I think it usually falls in around BRD/MCH.
team composition matters more than individual classes
In reality, you can get every class to 70, so there's no reason to just use 1. Unlock them all and you can rotate depending on what you need.
I agree with this.
BLM does a lot of damage, but because it's a caster, you break your stance alot running around the map.
Red Mage and summoner isn't great damage, but having revive and cure on higher level dungeons can make a huge difference, especially when playing with duty finder people.
Anyhow the meta currently still is:
