In my server, materia I and II can be more expensive than V most of the time, so it's a way to get some extra money
After that, you can donate it to your grand company for seals, desynthesize it or donate it to the Enclave (Stormblood area) if you don't convert it to materia.
- Spiritbond it; this destroys the gear and turns it into a piece of materia. This can only be done if you've worn it enough to get it to 100% spirit. Gear with materia slotted inside it binds faster. Since high-level combat materia is so easy to get now-a-days, I'd suggest only doing this for fun, getting fodder materia, or progress on the achievements for spiritbonding.
- Desynthesize it; this destroys the gear and refunds one of its crafting materials and some crystals. Desynthesis is a long term investment for getting a bunch of free stuff from the gear you get from raids, trials, and dungeons. If you're not invested in crafting classes, don't bother.
- Expert Delivery; free company seals. This is only for the uncraftable gear you get from dungeons and the like. You need to be a certain military rank with your Grand Company to have this option though.
- Sell it; just bite the bullet. The gear is worthless. You KNOW its worthless. You know what's not worthless? Inventory space.
Those 4 suggestions are for old and unused combat gear. If you're having inventory troubles with event gear, then there's a better solution. Go to an inn and go to the Armoire. It's a special chest that stores most event gear. Its worth checking out what can actually be stored away in it, so as to not be taking up space elsewhere.
