Im sure there is also Plate for it, but kinda... Later?
After that, you'll get job specific gear tailored to LNC/DRG, which in some cases consists of light plate pieces.
If I go for Blacksmith/Armorer will that be effective for me anytime soon, or should I focus on leatherworking/Miner (maybe Botanis+Weaver too) until I hit the level I can actually use the armor?
If it's just about the look. FF14 comes with the glamour system. That means you wear the good gear/armor for protection but you see Gear/Armor B on your character.
So if there is good looking gear, dont care about the Level^^
About crafting. Early on its just not worth the effort and later... Only if you want to make rare stuff, or a lot of Money^^
it offers more protection than WoL gear but you won't get a full set before lvl 50.
just a part of it from lvl 45 job quest.last part is lvl 50 where you get an better full set anyways.
then go for token gear if you have the currency wich you can farm in dungs and roulette.
as for crafting, well it can cost a lot of money to get it started.if your fine with being broke but wanna have to abillity to craft stuff then obviously you should go for it.eventually it will pay back.

Here's a list of almost every armor set that can be equipped as a Dragoon. https://www.ffxivcollection.com/tag/drg/
besides.dragoon never was intended to tank.not even semi-tank like in most other games.
they can however take some hits and have better def stats than bard or assassin thanks to the altered armor wich gets better endgame.
they also get some good self buffs incl one that heals with each hit you make.

Mine wears the Darklight Set, which is plate over chainmail. Lancers (yet to be Dragoons) typically wear light armour eg. leather and mail. Dragoon sets are heavier in design, but again, that doesn't make any reference to non-Dragoon armor such as tanks.
-----
To the person asking about Armourer (crafting), yes, you will have access to Dragoon-specific armour later, but there's typically no crafting classes by itself that entirely cover a single class (armour wise). Example, Weavers can make gear for casters and melee. So can Leatherworkers. It's why anyone with an interest in crafting typically levels ALL jobs rather than just a few. Armourer just covers most of the metal category, yet sometimes the best upgrade might be hard-leather pants underneath chain or plate armor, which requires a Leatherworker etc etc.
In short, don't level one crafting job and expect it to have access to every single gear-slot on a given character - it rarely happens.
Dragoons would need: Carpenter for Lances, Leatherworker for various gear-parts, especially early-game leather armour,, but mostly belts and legs, sometimes shoes, regardless of level. Armourer for most gear-parts (mostly later when Lancer becomes Dragoon), and possibly some Blacksmithing recipes for certain weapons later. Then there's Jewelcrafting for rings & earrings, Weaver for other off-kilter pieces, etc etc etc.
