The story gets better as you progress... It's a final fantasy game after all and they always start slow.
the patches for A Realm Reborn added a load of story quests and dungeons, though the story there isnt that great either.
Heavensward is when it gets good, they had a lot less content to make compaired to ARR, given its only 50-60 level wise so could focus more on the story, even if they had about the same amount of time.
edit: don't get me wrong the story in ARR is decent for a mmo, but not for a Final Fantasy.
Buying the level boost or story boost may skip stuff thats not interesting to you, but may also cause a lack of understanding on how your job works or what certain common mechanics do.
This game is more than that, it's unfortunate that other MMOs have conditioned players that leveling, storytelling and progression doesn't matter.
Now, as it was already said, this means that you'll start playing in a point were you are supposed to know how exactly your job works, and also how many common enemies/boss mechanics work, you'll still need to do all Stormblood main story line to reach the current endgame
...No duh you're forced to do the MSQ? Why WOULDN'T you be required to do the MSQ? This isn't an open world sandbox game, it's an mmoRPG. Emphasis on the "Role-Playing Game"
The story is enjoyable once you get through the slow start and you'll learn how to use your classes along the way. Plus if you have wait times for dungeons I'd strongly advise to take a gathering profession to fill in the time.
