The Arcanist is Dot heavy.
For Healing... Not so sure... Conjurer(Whitemage) can use Hots, but...
Edit: Just try any Class you want. A Class change takes like 2 Seconds... As soon as your starting Class hits Level 10 and you do your second Guild Quest the game will tell you that you can go and be what ever you want^^
Scholar, the healer you get from leveling Arcanist, is more shield-based healing. And Summoner, the DPS you get from Arcanist, is very DoT- heavy.
If you wind up getting the full game, definitely try out Red Mage, which you get after levelling one class to 50. It's also a solid DPS magic class with a few support skills thrown in.
As for HoT healers, your options are Conjurer (White Mage), and Astrologian, unlocked when entering the first expansion.
