Crafting in this game is prettty much it's own MMO self contained within FFXIV. In depth is selling it short. There's a technique to crafting, specializations per level tier, choices to make where you're limited in how deeply you can go into all crafts. Dominating crafters manage tons of auctions and sell to make money and build more.

As someone that has all my crafting and gathering classes to max level, has maxium melds, and crafts every day i'll hit upon few of your questions.

(1) All the crafting classes are interdependent upon each other due to cross class skills. The general order to level them is All to 15 -> Culinarian to 37 -> Carpenter to 50 -> Weaver to 50 -> Alchemist 50 -> Rest to 50 -> All to 70. The reason for this order is to get the necessary cross class skills as soon as possible to make leveling easier on yourself. You get Steady Hand II at CUL 37, CRP 50 you get Byregot's Blessing, WVR 50 you get Carful Syntesis II, ALC 50 you get Comfort Zone.

(2) The crafting system is somewhat in depth in the sense that you will have rotations much like your dps or tank classes do. Except instead of damage you're increasing the Progress and Quality of the craft. The more quality you have the higher % chance you have to High Quality the craft once the progress bar is completed. The Progress Bar is the measurement towards the completion of the item.

(3) You can make decent money crafting though that shouldn't be the reason you craft. Do it for the love of crafting itself or you're going to end up hating it in the end. If you want a figure I personally make anywhere between 5 to 20 million gil a day depending on how much effort i'm putting in.

EDIT: (4) It's also recommended to level your gathering classes to max level first(Miner -> Botanist -> Fisher) so you don't have to spend millions of gil on resources from the market board to level your crafters.

Long story short if you want to be serious about crafting you're going to want to level up all of them including all of your gathering classes to max level. It can be a serious time investment. Culinarian and Alchemist though are especially good for making a nice steady income while the other classes make items that can sell for more but sell less frequently.
