Red mage

Hi, i was thinking of getting back to this game and buying the DLC with the Red mage, now my question is, if i create a new character, what should i pick if i wanted to play as red mage?
Can i sellect it from start or do i pick something else and then grow into the class to become one?

Red mage starts at level 50, so you'll need another job at that level to be able to unlock it, new character or otherwise. As for making a new character, you'll get a free lv 50 starter gear set exclusive to red mage when you unlock it, so you can play what you like, but if you wanna get used to casting, try thaumaturge

Thaumaturge (Black Mage), Arcanist (Summoner / Scholar) and Conjurer (White Mage) are all good options. They share gear and Red Mage is a caster of both White and Black Magic, so the Former and Latter options are sort of a good intro while Arcanist also gives you the duality of being able to play a ranged caster or healer as you please. (There are seperate job quests for both classes, but they level off the same base class.)

Personally wouldn't recommend Black Mage (Thaumaturge) to anyone planning to play Red Mage. BLM has a very stationary approach to DPS, where RDM is very mobile. On the other hand, Summoner (Arcanist) is less stationary, comes with a pet (which is a godsend for questing) and the gear will immediately be usable by Red Mage when you unlock it at 50.

I will look at those and see what i can do, i use to hear(back when i was active in the game) that the BLM/Thaumaturge was Very hard to play.
Is that true today, should a "newbie" leave that class/job alone?

Eh, it’s not really that hard to play. People seem to confuse swapping elements between fire and ice as “hard”.

Honestly I think playing Arcanist competently is harder.
