If you are talking about food to change it's color then you'd have to grow it or buy off the MB.
If you're talking about racing food then you'll need to craft it or MB.
If you're talking about stable food, most of that is grown as well but it might be possible to get Krakka Root from a vendor. I'm not actually sure.
Stable food is grow, some vendors, and markets.
Mostly growing.
But the vath do stock a good variety of the buff/stable food.
And the color food you can buy the seeds from one of the gc vendors iirc.
note, in case your not familiar with the Buff food, you do not have to feed that to your choco in the stable, it's a buff food much like the food we eat. You just feed the kind of food buff you want the choco to have and you can feed it on the map. I use the Healing food most of the time since I mostly use my choco in healing mode, I just pop a gourd on him.
Stock up at Vath, you can buy with gil there as well as beast currency.
The buff food can also be used for stable feeding.
And if you feed it the same buff food enough times in a row it becomes its favourite and when used in the field gives a higher buff.
