/shout
/shout will have you shouting to the whole of the area your on.
/yell is for the server your on not just the particular area/map

( I used to mix these up so I"m thinking that is how it is, like in other games you have shout for local area, world chat for whole of server)

however if your asking about just talking to someone near you, it is not shout.
/general or /g is normal talk
/y or /yell
/s or /shout
/t or /tell is whisper in this game
/p or /party is party
/a or /alliance is alliance chat when your in raids and there are alliances

note that you can also just set up your tabs also to what chat will appear in what tab and that you do under character settings.

also you can simple click on the left side of your chat box and you will see the list of /chat names and you can also choose your chat that way.

But if your on trial you will only be able to speak in general chat anyway as the other chats are restricted to subscription players. that said you can have someone who is subscribed invite you to a party and then you can chat in party.

you can't whisper them however they can whisper you but you will not be able to reply in whisper mode back to them.

hope that helps.

/yell is for a wider area than /say, but not all over the map, like /shout is.
It is not filtered by servers. (open areas are not spread across servers) Good for large hunts.
There is also /fc for Free Company chat, when you join one of those.
The others are as Blissy says. ^_^
