You have some freedom to choose a starting class, but some jobs are locked behind MSQ/level progression. (The HW jobs [dark knight, machinist, astro], for example, require you to be able to get to the HW zones which means beating the main story quest up through the entire 2.x patch cycle. I know the SB jobs require you to be at least level 50 on another battle class, and probably own the expansion, but I don't think they require any MSQ progression).

Of all the jobs/classes available during ARR, only Rogue (later Ninja) can't be selected from character creation. The fastest way to start playing that class is to create a character that starts in Limsa Lominsa (so off the top of my head, ACN/MRD) and get to level 10 and unlock the armory chest/class swapping feature, then go over and do the Rogue quests.

The way ff works is that it tries to focus you around 1 character overall

so your one *toon* can play every class in the game.

you can choose all the base classes from the beggining of the game
which at level 30 turn into there Jobs
Gladiator
Muraauder
Arcanist
Archer
Lancer
pugilist
Rogue
thaumaturge
Conjurer

then you have a whats called Additional Jobs

These additional jobs do not have a corresponding class.they are only available once you start the heavensward Storyline
which are
DarkKnight
Mechanist
Astrologian

these jobs start at level 30

The two other additional jobs Start once you finish the main ARR story. the base game storyline
Redmage
Samurai

these jobs start at level 50

nothing is limited in this game other than the fact that if you dont own the stormblood expansion you cant progress past level 50 and 3 job classes are locked from you

even if you start the game as a Gladiator to later become a paladin, you can always change to anotehr class from as early as level 10.

i hope this helps. i may have missed a few things.

That's a much more detailed/in depth answer.

There are only a few practical reasons why you would want to have more than one character in this game. One would be if you wanted to play on another server, although this is less of an issue now that you can make parties across data-centers (and they're talking about adding cross-DC linkshells and FCs in the future). Though, you may want to have another character on another data center.

The other reason might be if you're really into raiding and you want to stay geared on more than one job and/or role at a time. Because of how end game tomestone caps work, it's hard to stay "raid ready" on multiple jobs while a raid's still relevant. There's lockouts on tomestones as well as lockouts on how many drops you can get from the end game raids every week. As a patch cycle is winding down, sometimes they remove or lessen some of these locks, but it's never really possible to be equally geared on every job on a single character at end game.

thank you very much for answers, thats very helpful.
so if im correct - If i want to be like eeehm.. samurai for example i need to finish main storyline + own Stormblood dlc and then i can "switch" to it and like stay on this "class", gear it up etc?
DrDeezee Jan 24, 2018 @ 3:04pm
Correct, "main storyline" in this case being all the MSQ through the 2.x patch cycle (as the main story continues through 3.x and 4.x)

you dont have to own stormblood to use the stormblood classes. your just unable to level them past there starting levels.

there was so much backlash with the Havensward classes being locked to HW only players that it was removed for the stormblood classes. you only need MSQ for Redmage and Samurai

2.x refers to A Realm Reborn patches (2.0 being ARR's launch), 3.x is Heavensward and 4.x is Stormblood.

Patch cycles, basically. 2.x refers to the "A Realm Reborn" patch cycle, which is the base game now. (1.0 was the failed version of FFXIV from Sep 2010, ARR launched sometime in 2013.) 3.x is the Heavensward patch cycle, and 4.x is the Stormblood patch cycle. (Whatever the next expansion is will be 5.x, for example).

So far there's generally been five "major" patches (ARR wrapped up with 2.57, HW with 3.56). The game released (and each expansion has released) with 4 end game fights (called the current 'raid tier'), and 4 new fights are added on even patches. In between patches have generally introduced other content (to include things like Diadem, the new Ultimate difficulty, 24 man raids, and so on). The odd patches are also considered "catch up" patches, as they make it easier to reach the highest i(tem)level, which measures a character's power.

If you want to be SAM, you can pick a melee that's close, I'd recommend dragoon(for example), get to 50, then when you reach 50, you continue your main story quest with lvl50 SAM(SAM starts lvl50, you're lucky).
Vainesy Jan 25, 2018 @ 3:13am
aslong as hes MSQ is up to the right part that unlocks there option. they dont become instantly unlocked at 50.
Burnnie Jan 25, 2018 @ 5:56am
They do actually. MSQ is not required for SAM and RDM.

"SAM and RDM require completion of the Main Scenario Quest The Ultimate Weapon, and begin at level 50 when unlocked"

You will be able to accept the quest to unlock red mage regardless of quest progression as long as your character has a level 50 Disciple of War or Magic class/job.
