When should I farm dungeons for gear?

Currently lv 50 dragoon, switched to samurai. I been using gear from class quests and main story.
-I know that gear is perfectly fine for now.
I am still working on main story, I plan on finishing it

So when should i farm dungeons for end game gear? can i assume lv 80 dungeons?

There's still more jobs for me to unlock and try out before i decide on a main.
-that being said, Dragoon and Samurai are on the top of the list.
I will venture into Paladin and White Mage at some point. And magic dps will be later.

At the start of the expansion when there aren't many new gears. But after only one big patch your best source of gears will be from tomestone. Even when leveling your poetic tomestone is enough to get your ilvl up, use anything you can get from dungeon of course, but there's no point to farm it, unless you want the rare mount/minion/music roll.

For a level 50 job, Ironworks gear is the best (especially the augmented version). The ilvl130 set will be good enough until you reach The Vault (if you're wearing the ilvl 130 set), or the Aery (when using the ilvl 120 set). From then, you'll need to farm those dungeons a little bit. But, reaching level 60 will give you the level 60 AF2 set (for DRG in this case), and you'll also be able to buy the ilvl 260 Shire set in Idyllshire (after finishing the MSQ called "Heavensward").

The thing is... Non-levelling dungeons (50/60/70/80) give the "barelly minimum" gear you need to continue in the following patches. The best gear pieces will always be the Savage 8-man raid sets, the Augmented tomestone sets, then the "normal" tomestone sets, some crafted pieces (because extra materia melds), and also the gear from Alliance raids. The gear from normal 8-man raids is also good, but just a little above the dungeon sets

To keep it short: no need to focus on grinding as you will level up pretty quickly. Dungeons and main story rewards will keep you up all the time. For example 2 weeks ago I was doing Stormblood end game raids, farming tomestones etc and the moment I said "I'm done", Shadowbringers storyline started to give better equipments than my Stormblood equipments.

Unless there's a specific armor piece you want for a glamour, you won't really need to farm for dungeon gear until end-game. You get plenty of gear from doing dungeons normally for levels alone and vendor gear is perfectly fine as well.

You actually don't want gear from the dungeons instead what you want is Allegan Tomestones
Which you get from Duty Finder.

Go to Mor Dohna and there will be a lady there to trade you those Tomestones for poetics to buy Top notch level 50 gear.

You can also further upgrade that gear in North Shrine

Really the only time that is absolutely needed to farm better gear is max lvl, but it helps to get a few up to date pieces along the way esp. if you're tanking or healing dungeons. Alternatively you could always spam Potd/HoH and not worry about it at all

tomestones is a currency in the game since years. its used to buy armor. you literally never farm dungeons for armor/weapons as they are fully useless at endgame compared to tomestone gear and raid gear and weapons come from ex trials.

dont set foot into ex trials and savage unprepared tough. youll get kicked in no time. by that point others expect you to know what youre doing. the difficulty really ramps up there. dungeons dont compare at all.

dungeons are really only used to farm the tomestone currency or level your character. thats really all they are good for. even at lvl 80.

the mainstory doesnt end at 50 btw.it goes all the way to 80. and you must finish it in order to unlock anything endgame related.
