Generally its a good idea to level up all up around the same time (though you can ignore Culinarian(cooking)).
Doing the hand in leves gets you exp from gathering the mats, crafting the items then trading them in.
there isnt really any one thats "best" to start with thou.
Start with Miner and Botany they are the easiest and are a good source of early money especially mats from level 20+
Leather worker \ Weaver will also be good complementary jobs because they can make clothes for Miner and Botanist as well as crafting jobs
Do Levve missions to level them up ( don't do battle craft leves unless you want a specific reward gear ) best way to level up hand and field jobs. Also do your daily Grand Company turn ins ( when you unlock it )
do the story, get some decent gill behind you, say 300-500k. completing the base game is generally a good idea before starting the "professions" also you can have all of them, just like combat jobs.
guessing they're WoW refugees
I would do them as you progress because grinding to 80 in one go for gathering \ crafting will be boring. It is better to space it out.
Gathering, on the other hand, is a lot simpler to get into compared to crafting. It's cheap to get into, as you only need to gear one class, as opposed to all of them, and it doesn't require any money except for your gear and cordials. There are some materials that are always in demand, and sell for quite a bit (electrum and silver ore come to mind, but there are way more).
With that being said however, there is one other way to make money without having to do crafting or gathering, and that is through Hunts.
When you kill an S hunt, you will receive a Cracked Planicluster and Stellacluster. When you kill an A hunt, you get a 40% chance at getting a Planicluster. You can trade these in for Materia, and depending on your server, these can sell for 100k+ a pop. On my server, Materia 8s are selling for about 120k.
Not to mention you get seals and nuts, which can then be further traded in for items that you can sell on the MB.
Currently, I have a system for cycling through jobs where I play the MSQ for one section as laid out by the wiki, then go back to level 2 jobs by 10 levels each, then go back to the MSQ and finish one section of the story, then come back and level 2 more jobs and repeat. Up until this point, it hasn't been too difficult to level just 3 crafting professions and one gathering profession (I'm strictly doing only what's needed for Samurai, something I want to level up next). BUT, there's a big "but" here. Somewhere between 25-30, you start to run out of NPC vendors that are willing to sell you ingredients for your crafting stuff. And even at level 30, which is arguably still early in the journey, buying stuff from the marketboard could cost anywhere from 40k-70k per bundle of ingredients.
So yeah, today, I'm going to start leveling up the other crafting/gathering jobs so this stops being a problem, lol.
I've worked it out and by keeping a regular rhythm of going between MSQ and crafting, I can still max everything out before I reach level 80. And I'm not really concerned about using these jobs to gear out my warrior. The MSQ takes care of that for me. But having a set waiting for my alts will be nice.
