In some ways its a good change, as the pet bar was rather clunky and trying to get them to do something sometimes had delay issues as they'd queue it behind their own attacks, but it's also not great as it also removed several of the intricacies of pet management and made them more like a fancy DoT. If you haven't played Summoner before the likelihood that you'll enjoy it is much higher than someone who mained Summoner and enjoyed dealing with the Pet mechanics, but either way, YMMV.
Mind you, there's nothing like WoW's Hunter or anything where you could tame whatever pet you want out in the wild, you get given specific pets as you level up to work with. They do this both for lore reasons and for mechanic reasons. Square really wants to ensure that you'll always know exactly what your other party members will have when you get into a group with them, which is why Blue Mage is a limited job, so when you get into a group with a Summoner or a Scholar, you'll know what pets they have and what tools they have at their disposal.
However, a while ago there were some rumors and datamining about some kind of Beast Master type class.
Expansion is already out.
oof, who even asked for another mini-game class?
