Confused on buying the game... Help?
Hello, I'm currently playing the trial to see if I like the game or not. A friend of mine advised me against buying it on steam.

That said, I AM confused on what you're getting when you buy the game (I'm using dollars since the EU FFXIV website is not showing prices for me):
- Base game = €10, not on sale, while official website sells for $20
- Heavensward and Stormblood not for sale on steam (?)
- Steam sells a combo pack of base game + Shadowbringers for €45

On the website of FFXIV, there is also something that confuses me: the FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Complete Edition pack. The description says: "This package includes the base game and both expansions (Heavensward, Stormblood & Shadowbringers)". I don't want to be nitpicky, but "both" means two in my book, not three. So ARE we getting everything for $60?

My tl;dr question: do I get the entire game with the 2 first xpacs if I buy the base game on steam for just €10?

Thank you in advance.

I don't know why he would advise against buying it on Steam. Seeing as your new it would cause zero issue for you. I actually went from owning the game prior to it being on Steam to getting my converted into a Steam account without any issue. (This is the main reason people that owned it prior to it being on Steam would say not to use Steam, at least the only reason they would have anyhow).

The Complete Edition, from my knowledge, does NOT Include Shadowbringers, but it may now since it has released. You only need to purchase the BASE game for $19.99 and Shadowbringers $39.99 to unlock all of the expansions. (This is why Heavensward and Stormblood are not for sale on Steam now, it's to keep you from wasting your money)

I have a recruit-a-friend code you can use if your friend hasn't given you one already as well.

Updated: I guess an issue you could run into if the trial you're playing is not ran through Steam is that you'd maybe have to start over, but this isn't something I ever had to do and I was able to switch over to the Steam version on mogstation and keep my same account without issue.

The only way this is possible is if you go from a non-Steam trial account to buying the game on Steam. The way you've worded it makes it sound like you can switch Steam to non-Steam and vice versa, this is not the case.

No you get the base game and it's update content which take you right before Heavensward. All expansions are bundled together with the most recent expansion. In this case Shadowbringers.

You've got plenty of content with just the base game and casually playing could see you hit 100 hours, less if you only focus on the main story. But of course YMMV.

I see, thanks! My friend only passed it on as hearsay. The only reason I could possibly find was no CE, but I don't care about that.

Makes sense! I figured out the website now I looked at it with your input and it's just a wording error on Sqenix their part.

Thanks! So just buy the base game until I get through the pre-expansion content and just buy the expansions after. That makes sense, as it's like that with other MMOs as well. (Except if you want to play one of the xpac races or play one of the xpac classes, which requires you to buy them first)

this chart seems to sum it up: "Package Contents Summary"
https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/product/

kind of a garbage way to sell the game, imo. should be reversed. old xpacs are free and newest is $

You forget that "big business" is out to make money. They make more stuffing them into the newest expansion then the base game.

How do you go about refreshing your subscription on steam? For ESO there is just the sub thing on Steam but I can't find it for FFXIV?
