And it depends on what you're looking for in a game.

This is honestly not true at all unless you’re trying to get onto one of the High / Full pop servers. It’s like trying to roll on Balmung in FFXIV.
They’ve added like 20 servers since Classic Launched and they and half of the originals have NO queue time.
I’m on Bloodsail Buccaneers and haven’t seen a queue since the second day.

I could go into it more and even categorize it farther into a 5th generation but you should get my point now. WoW is most definitely not a first generation mmo.
Still very grindy. Not as grindy as SWG though.
When I played through WoW retail at the time, I thought it was neat and then promptly forgotten the game even existed. Why is that though?
Well it's because while I enjoyed the game and could understand why people loved the hell out of it.... I wasn't actually invested in the world of Warcraft (pun not intended). I felt like I was just popping in the area doing quests because I could, doing dungeons and raids because I was TOLD that that's the fun part of the game.
All the while despite the slow as hell start that is FF14, I loved the world building at the beginning (start in Ul Dah if you want an interesting political city arc). I actually liked the quests being organic in the sense that I feel like I am actually progressing through a story and actually building MY legacy as the Warrior of Light (canon wise, all other players are just random adventurers and you are the true chosen one. Square enix takes advantage of this fact quite often). I am doing dungeons and raids in the game because I actually wanted to do them to further build my interest in the world (HW helped that a lot). I have even built a headcanon for how my character became certain classes and what sort of personality he has.
To me, WoW is for players who want to get into the fun parts of the game fast, but at the same time.... you won't get as grand as a reward if you literally throw yourself to the end. FF14 is for players wanting to become actual adventurers and growing slowly but surely, eventually hitting to reaches you wouldn't think of.
Cuz you know, they didn't do anything at all to fix it in the last patch. Except you know... revamp the Heart of Azeroth system to give us more of what we wanted, give us two large zones with tons to do in them, or anything at all like that.
Or show that in the PTR they're still working to do that, and given strong signs they won't be just skipping to a new expansion.
Not sure being a big blizzard fan equates to logical or rational thinking, tbh.
I mean, they all do. But yes, FF14 is pretty damn good right now.
And here we are; quite a few years later answering this question and I'm going to answer it honestly (from my perspective that is).
If you want fast paced combat, big group activities, then pick WoW classic (but only do so if you can stand the grind). HOWEVER; if you don't mind the grind anyways but would like a MUCH deeper story, better graphics and more tactical gameplay as well as more sideactivities apart from the grind of the main campaign; then go FFXIV.
