You get what you pay for.
What do you prefer? Tab Target or Action combat?
Graphics wise, I feel BDO takes the cake, I recall watching a video of BDO:R and it looked so much better than FFXIV.
Black Desert Online only look good when you stand still. The pop in completely ruins the visuals for the game when moving for me.
FFXIV is not a great looking game either. On graphics alone, It's a downgraded game from a 2010 game, so no wonder. But it does the job just fine though. It does have some stunning boss fights , and the combat animations is probably the best looking in the MMORPG genre.
Gameplay is more important than visuals (allthough good graphics is always a plus obviously)
Black Desert Online:
Horrible story
Open world
Sandbox
PVP
Action combat
B2p (paying lots of money will give you huge advantages). They promised the game would stay B2P with no p2w when they launched the game. I bought it at launch, but stopped playing shortly after when they broke their promise.
Final Fantasy XIV:
Best story ever in a MMORPG
Open world (but every map is instanced)
Themepark
Bad PVP
Tab target combat
Subscription. It gets updated a lot, you get what you pay for from the subscription. You can earn almost everything in-game, no player has any advantages when paying more money. (It does have a shop though with skins and name change/race change/server change and so on ..)
FFXIV is VERY story heavy and is like a multiplayer jrpg, if you dont like story or jrpg's then its probably not for you. Also one character can be all the classes so no need to roll zillions of alts.
Some of the things i actually liked was that you can catch your own horse to use as a mount; and also how cities feel and look like actual cities (compared to most MMOs). Ohh, and you can also climb, which helps a lot when trying to reach some places.
If you decide to play it, just don't expect to look badass without spending $30 on a single costume (because it's a F2P game that, for some weird ass reason, was released as a B2P here).
If you want open world PvP, also consider that ArcheAge Unchained is out as well, it's B2P with all P2W elements removed, and it's pretty damn good. I go there and gank some care bears whenever I need to get away from the "everything is toxic" bs in FF14 ^^
This game has become one of my fav MMORPG's I have ever played. The story is very very slow at the start but it gets way better.
If you say buying illegal gold from gold sellers or even accounts is pay to win. Then every game is pay to win... wtf
I went to play BDO because I played FFXIV for 3 years since beta and wanted something new but I fall into BDO marketing trap that making me keep spending and spending to catching up then I ended up wasting $2000+ USD overall in BDO in less than 1 year...and I still never yet even good enough to fight back everyone of those 1 shot players with god pen gears...
$2000 USD I could have sub FFXIV for 20 years and enjoy endless amount story from it and get everything I want ingame without paying extra. It was my very deep regret to touch BDO. BDO's fun is there but it is not fun when end game all about cash shop.
If you prefer a casual mmo pick FFXIV, you get to enjoy more than 1000+ hours of stories, obtain anything you want ingame, only use 1 character because you can be anything and have all classes, collect over 500+ ingame music to play inside your room or house, developer LISTEN to players feedback. Gear doesn't matter in this game if you have skills because I always go undergear ilv in extreme or savage easy clear but it's not recommended for noobs to try it. FFXIV have best optimization in all mmo so far because it also support ps4 crossplay together, my old pc i7 3770k + gtx 670 was running this game with 90fps max graphic most of the time, except when too many players in FATE or hunt will drop to 30fps lowest but you can easily fix this by reducing number of players display on screen and poop that to 60fps. It was able to stay running for 1 week straight without any memory leak or performance issue.
If you prefer a hardcore mmo, you are rich, don't like story, enjoy 24/7 grinding and leaving your pc running like bitcoin mining none stop then pick BDO. Skills doesn't matter in this game, it's all about your gear, random slam buttons can 1 shot anyone if you had those god tier pen gears. BDO have the worst optimization, you need very high end pc to run this game. It unable to run more than 3 days so far I tested without crashing or memory leak, but that was tested long ago, they might improved it but still the game engine is still crap.
*Please note that my current pc is i9 9900k + 2080ti*
take a look at the FFXIV current jobs with actions showcase, maybe you have some interest.

At first there seems so much to do in BDO, lvling is exciting because of the cool combat. After reaching lvl 50 I started to see how the game was for real. Only a few gear that matters in the game, go enchant it with stones that you must grind for. Fail, and you will lose durability of your gear, and the higher the gear becomes, more likely will it fail. Go into the cash shop and you will see that it will make your life much easier. Care to look cool in BDO? Go buy a cool costume set in the cash shop :) It was just too much for me, I had some fun now and then, the sea hunting was really fun. Don't bother with BDO, but if you like the hours long grind for one single item, or to continue enchanting your gear and see it fail again so you need to grind more hours, go ahead! I didn't like it, but maybe you will like it, I had almost 300 hours of fun, so maybe you too :)
