FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

Quicker way to download client?
I'm installing the free trial (well I guess it is just the regular game but the account is a free trial), and the FFXIV launcher is now downloading the latest version. It is downloading at an average of 0.5 mb per second, occasionally going up to 1 mb, and has 17 GB to go ("430 mins remaining" ie 7 hours). No idea why it is so slow - I can download through the Steam client games at 15 mb per sec no problem, have disabled any sorts of firewalls etc, but still extremely slow. I guess their download server that I am connected to is just slow. Is there some other location where I can just download the latest version of the client, at my normal download speed, and then just log in and play with my account? I want to play this evening, not wait til tomorrow :D

There's some ways, but the best way (and useful for other things) is to configure your connection to handle torrents better.

UDP
55296-55551
TCP
80, 8080, 443, 55296-55551

These are the ports you want OPEN and preferrably FORWARDED to your computer's IP address. The range 55290 and above is specially important because these are the ports that the game is actually downloaded over. Firewalls sometimes block this but routers almost ALWAYS block these because general internet users never touch these ports, so they assume them to be security risks. (Reality is, if you're gonna be hacked anyone who wants to would just use Port 80 via some simple tricks.)

So this is almost fully dependant on your router settings. Familiarize yourself with them, open up the right ports and you won't have a problem. I typically download patches at 5.50 mbps and that's only because I'm mindful of the rest of the house's internet usage.

Great thanks, I will forward those ports and see if it helps. I generally have no problem download torrents over my usual torrent clients (always at fast speeds) but lets see how it goes.

Hmm didn't seem to make a difference when open and forwarding ports. Even enabled DMZ to see, and no difference (it is disabled again now). I guess it is just a slow connection for some reason here in Finland.

Hmm, you may want to try using a VPN to speed things up at that point, could be an ISP issue.

Or simply Square low quality servers.

Has almost nothing to do with torrenting clients whatsoever. It's amusing how much you profess to love this game but keep trying to make any quip you possibly can even when there's nothing behind it other than a need to stir up something. If you can provide evidence of low quality servers that disproves basic torrenting protocols and ISP issues, please by all means provide it. Otherwise stop with the cheap shots.
