Guides are good, videos and such.

Also, having a tank as your first class means you'll always go in undergeared making everything harder than it has to be.

The question wasn't about guides but about picking up the job, it is different matter. Also where did he say it is his first class? Actually his post states quite opposite ''never tanked in FF XIV'' which means he was playing something else there.

That's correct :) I already tried out several classes & jobs^^

People will say Paladin, but what do they know? Carry a big axe and go Roe and never look back!
Lalas are the best WARs.

LalaFell Cleave. ♥

eww
As most people said, PLD is the best tank for starters. It's pretty simple and mitigates more damage than the rest, but does less damage to compensate.

Keep in mind that you need to stay on point with your ilvls. If you're not, you'll lose aggro very easily. Try to communicate with the party and tell them you're new to tanking and to stop using DOTs if they're making you lose aggro too fast.

If you can, have some FC mates to run dungeons with you to pratice and give you advice on-the-run.

Use Overpower/Flash/Unleash two or three times on every pull to ensure you get the most aggro from mobs (especially on early dungeons, where you don't have your tank stance yet). If the pull is taking too long, Overpower/Flash/Unleash again for good measure.

Try to make sure you use your defensive CDs on every pull and don't overlap them (Rampart is always handy and has a short CD) and make the mobs face away from the rest of the party. That will make your healer's job much easier and, in turn, it will make YOUR job easier.

Lastly, don't be afraid if your health is getting low. Your healer (if he's not new as well) probably knows that and will heal you if necessary.

Good luck!

Well, that changes things.

Tanks are usually the worst first job to start at the beginning of the game.

PLD is probably the easiest, then it's DRK, WAR is currently the most complicated and honestly, least good in terms of endgame.

I'd actually go the other way and say play Warrior rather than Paladin. Paladin still is hard to hold aggro in the early dungeons etc, and they are usually expected to do major pulls / main tank, where Warriors have a lot more damage and sustain if you learn them Its true Warrior is more complicated end game, but you really need to know how to mitigate effectively with Paladin and that takes as much learning as how to play Warrior (I have both at 70)

It's to late guys, i'm already a Paladin :D It's so much fun! I'm really enjoying it ^^ Maybe i will try the Warrior later :)
I'm terrible at tanking and I've tried both Warrior and Paladin. For me Paladin feels a lot more secure and seems to have more "tools" that Warrior does. I'd try Paladin first and then unlock Warrior later and see if that suits your tastes better.

Load of crap.

PLD now has shield oath since lvl 30, and dungeons before that don't really matter much in terms of aggro, All tanks now have more or less equal DPS while PLD is superior than other 2 in terms of mitigation, sustain and utility. DRK has superior self mitigation and magical defense while War has slashing debuff.

It is not HW anymore Warrior is now very similar to DRK while PLD is core of the party. So depends by the fight and composition it is either PLD/WAR or PLD/DRK now. Warrior is no longer superior tank.

They should of gone WAR still though dude ;p
